Gigs & Support slots

Has anyone advice on getting a few gigs around the country? A few decent gigs without having to book costly venues?
What's the norm for bands trying to get a foot in? We doing relatively ok here in our home town of Cork but outside this beautiful city we a little lost. We'd love to either get our own gig for just expenses basically or a good support slot. Who gives out support slots anyway? Is it the touring band has the final say or the venue or promotor? Any advice at all would be much appreciated especially any contacts. Cheers

Could you talk to some bands outside Cork and organise a gig swap? They'd go to Cork and support you, and you'd go to wherever they're based and support you.
