Undercoat paint

    I'm just undercoating a few doors now and the ones that have dried a bit are looking fairly patchy. Is that right or did I mess them up?

    Actually, I would not worry too much with primer. Primer is just the coat that bonds to the substrate, giving the top coat something to grab a hold to. Finish coats bonds to primers better than bonding to bare substrates, thinking your ok with a good even finish coat or two. Good Luck!

    Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Most of the undercoating done now, finishing it off tomorrow, I now hate skirting boards...

    One more word. Primers should really dry out good before top coats are applied. This insures proper adhesion. Cooler temps. means longer drying times.;)

    ah yea, I'm leaving them a good while (over night at least) between coats, going well, should be done tomorrow with any luck.

    If I could offer my own piece of advice....

    Dont slack on the sanding, I know it's the worst of all jobs but it really makes the difference between a botch job and a nicely finished door, also, any nicks on the door will make your final coat run like something that runs fast!
