Just wondering, does anyone know whether Father Ted was recorded in front of a live audience or does it have canned laughter and applause?

You're wrong. All the studio stuff was recorded in front of a live studio audience with the exterior stuff shown to them on video screens at the appropriate points.

I agree with AnonoBoy, Graham Linehan describes the recordings as being done in front of an audience in at least one of the DVD commentaries.

I would presume in front of a live audience as the it crowd (also by linehan) is definitly in front of an audience

I know people who attended some recordings and have it from them. Think I read it in a Linehan interview but can't find a link now.

But as suggested ask Mr. Linehan himself via twitter.

I think the interior scenes were filmed in front of an audience in London, while the exterior scenes were filmed in Ireland (Clare).
