    Hi,

    I've ordered my new iMac 27" 2.8 GHz Quad-Core i7 :) Now the waiting begins :(

Anyway, I've ordered an Airport Extreme and propose to use Time Machine across the Airport Extreme for backups.

I'm doing this for added protection. My logic is that using Time Machine on a 'local' disk will protect me in terms of HD failure, but not in the case of theft. The Airport Extreme and backup disk will be tucked away at a distance from the main machine.

I'd like to further improve my backup strategy by periodically 'retiring' hard disks off site (probably the parents/ work/ etc). Again the logic here is that my setup might be protected from HD failure and theft, but not against fire!

This might all seem a bit extreme (pardon the pun), but I have 15,000 odd photos, principally of the kids and as annoying as losing my work/ software/ music/ movies might be, at least I could replace them.

So does anyone have similar requirements? What do you use?

I assume I need some sort of NAS solution with swappable HDs. I'm not sure I need RAID as the iMac is the master HD and the NAS is just backup. But maybe I do.

My understanding is that I can use one of the Ethernet ports on the Airport Extreme to connect to the NAS. Is anyone doing this today with Time Machine?

All advice, as ever, very much appreciated.

    Regards,

    DFD.

PS. The iMac will have a 2TB disk in it. Whilst it won't be full for a while, I'd like a backup solution that can exceed the 2TB (obviously).
