Gun Dog Security

Lads, I read a horrifying piece in the Shooting times over the weekend about gun dogs being stolen in the UK.
The sheer quantities been stolen daily shocked me. I must find the mag to be sure but the numbers were ridiculously high!

It has me thinking about my runs & general security around the dogs.
I was wondering have any of you taken any measures for added security or have you heard of this been a problem in Ireland?

The thoughts of it happening would be devastating in the time & investment put into the dogs but also a shooting companion & family pet lost!

Iv often seen ads in the Uk mags for dogs that were stolen from owners. Offering 2000 grand reward etc. Seems fairly common over there.

from what ive heard epointer 'dog nappin' is a big business in england and not just restricted to gun dogs. . they steal the dogs, wait for you to put up signs and then hold you to ransom for the safe return of your dog.

i had a rotty pup stolen on me about ten years ago. . by travelers, traced it back to one paticulor haulting site but couldnt get my dog back. the gards told me they had a few complaints about that site but there was very little they could do.

i think joe duffy did a piece on it during the summer.

    scum if you ask me.

Micro chip all dogs, I hear now you can even get them tatooed

other than that if you really want to be careful go for cctv.

Ya I have em chipped & a cctv hooked up around house anyway...
Was thinking of re-doing the run in a bit heavier material to make it alot harder for the opertunist!

I have the gate padlocked but the run is chainlink and then I have weldmesh at the bottom, they'ld be through it in seconds if they wanted.

The ones i seen in the magazine were chipped it said. They were robbed from a gun dog training place. The chip helps if its sold to an innocent buyer but if the dog is being used by the theifs or people who know there stolen it dosnt really help. I think every ikc reg dog has to be chipped now.
Couple of years ago there was a spate of Boxer dogs being robbed around here.

My worst nightmare to have my dog stolen, even he dose test my patents 99.9% of the time. Can them micro chips only be traced if the dog leaves the country or taking to a vet?

I always thought of this as problem.. I just hope are other dog who is awefully vicous, will keep them out. She's that bad that you cant even tame her with meat or markeys. When she gets scared theres no talking to her..And iv no plans of changing her. When the gaurds came up to check the safe he even said joking shore you have no need for one. Though i do have to seperate them when fireworks go off etc. Due to the big dog ****ting her self.. Wrotty/boxer cross

The article said its best to chip & tatoo so you can easily identify but to also take plenty of photos of the dogs from different angles.

Some people heard em barking during the night & looked around & nothing doing. Came out in the morning & empty kennels...

Talk about sickening! Wouldnt you love to catch em!

    Try local halting sites

they are behind a lot of it around cork, local sites that they stayed in, people have found dead dogs in fields around the sites.. also be very careful putting ads in papers selling pups or dogs themselves
