Hi all,Just got a new laptop with windows 7 and I am using a Huawei E220 modem with Three for internet.I cant get it to connect with windows 7.I have Googled this problem but cant find a definite answer.I have contacted Three, but as usual no help. They offered to sell me a new Modem E1550 for 9Euro(because I am a valued customer ?) together with a new 12 month contract which I want to avoid if at all possible. It would be great if somebody here had a solution to this problem.

You might try this when connected to a XP / Vista machine and it might work.

Hi nazoil, thanks for quick reply.I tried this download and it upgraded the modem to 7.2Mbps.My speeds on XP seem to have improved a little but that might be down to the vagaries of Three.Unfortunately it still doesnt work on Windows 7.

I had the Huawei E220 modem on Vodafone and was using it with XP.

I now have Windows 7 and had to upgrade to the Huawei K3765.

The techie guy who set up my laptop said the old one wouldn't work. The new one is so slow, still checking whether it is dongle thing or laptop. I'm pretty sure it is dongle. Because signal was fine before I changed dongle.

Vodafone data support guy also told me that the E220 would not work with Windows 7. I'd presume that's the same with 3?

    Hope this helps slightly.

You must have a newer version than me.I've tried everything, but I still cant get it to connect.Three tell me its not compatable.

The E220 is the old white yoke isn't it? I remember having problems with it when I upgraded to 64-bit Vista. The solution I came across was to flash the eeprom on the dongle but I can't now remember where I got all the necessary tools and info. Er I could try copying the data off my one and host it somewhere for you to download if you want?

Edit: Just installed my old E220 there now and same as you, no connection so that's no use to you either sorry.

You will have to get it unlocked.Vodafone might give you the unlock code.

I have the E220...and have no problems using it on my laptop (Win 7) ???

I use it mainly on my desktop (Win XP), and just shove it in the laptop case when I go away, with a spare mini-b cable.

When I first got the laptop, I just connected it, and it worked straight away.
Didn't have to change a thing.

Sorry, that's probably not much help...but perhaps its not specifically a Win 7 thing?
Have you tried the dongle on other operating systems at all since you tried it on the Win 7 machine? eg XP or Vista?

Sounds like the older models don't have Win7 drivers on board ....

You may want to try the latest software version from huawei here and see if that works. Download the first file and try install that. You may need to rename the file to include a .zip at the end of it before u can extract it.

Thanks lynchie. Ill give that a shot. If that doesnt work Ill have to see if Vodafone have a modem that works with 64 bit Windows 7.

    http://www.mobilebroadbandrocks.com/files/e220-updater.zip

Run this patch every time you boot in win7 or vista.
This will allow windows to detect the modem not only the flash disk.

I have to do this every time i reboot win7.

    Regards,

    Mendo

PS. As soon as you run the patch win7 will detect the modem and install the drivers.

I have to run the patch every time I boot win7 and sometimes even after I've disconnected the modem from my laptop and connect it back.

It has something to do with the CD emulation on the USB stick where the drivers and the connection software are stored.

Win7 can't detect the modem and it only detects the USB stick as a storage device.

This happens to all the E220 modems regardless of who supplied the modem (3, O2 or Vodafone) and I am sure that is only a firmware issue on the modem and it might have been fixed in the latest release from Huawei.

I don't want to update the software in case I'll brick it and plus I don't have a version that will fix this issue.

The modem I use is an early version of E220 that is not even branded or locked (so I can switch sim cards any time I want).

I found this workaround and I am happy doing it every time I need.

As an alternative the patch exe file (is an archive) can be extracted with 7-zip and then run manualy.

    Regards,

    Mendo
