    Hi all,

Been given the above laptop from a mate but he has taken the HDD out. I require to source a new one but I notice that this laptop has some form of shock protection. I like that so would like to buy same type. Capacity required = as big as possible, depending on price.

Anyone recommend web store / make / model no etc.

    Cheers

This is the link to the repair/parts etc pdf manual.

    http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01613452/c01613452.pdf

Isn't the shock protection software related on those, so that any 2.5inch sata drive works (and also 9.5mm high, because the 12.5mm ones probably won't fit)?

I've an hp laptop with the 500gb drive on this link, but there's also a 640gb drive available. Both are 9.5mm high.

Thanks for the reply, have looked on HP Spares webshop and the original HDD is a fortune so Komplett is better; I am somewhat unsure of the maximum HDD size the laptop will "see". The 640Gb one seems great though.

Also, does anyone know for sure if it is the software which manages the HDD protection or is it the HDD itself - which would mean having to settle for HP's.

My mate has given me the laptop without any DVDs or CDs for anything (I was with him when he picked it from the shop so I know its legit), I know HP have lots of drivers etc but can I purchase a replacement "original set of discs" from them for a nominal amount? If so how etc.

    Cheers

Oh, one more thing, - can I go for a 7200 speed or am I stuck with a 5400 speed?

7200 will be ok. I would have bought a 7200, but there were none available when I bought the 5400.:(

There are a couple of 1TB drives around at the moment, but they're 12.5mm thick and won't fit in my HP. If you were certain that you had enough space, you could even install one of those. Dabs.ie have got these I think, or did have last time I looked.

All drives have got built in shock protection, so I can't see that there are any complications in that area. Perhaps the description is referring to that.
