Leinster Munster Semi in the HC 2010

I just finished reading the article on a possible Leinster/Munster HC Semi Final. (Link Below)

Personally I think its a bit much to be calling such things at this stage. While both are fantastic sides in their own right, there are no easy games in this competition. Look at what happened last weekend with LI and Scarlets. Nobody had predicted that result.

I know it sells newspapers and would be a fantastic fixture, but with the 6N's around the corner and god knows what else, it may be a bit assumptive to make such statements.

    Opinions Please.

Yes, fully agree that its a utterly pointless exercise.

both leinster and munster are in the quarter-finals; the fact that they may meet at a later stage is hardly shocking - and i dont see why it would sell papers!

Obviously I understand people would like to see it happen, but personally I'd rather see them face off in the final!!

That's not guaranteed yet is it?

I think it is. Even if they both lose this week 20 points will be enough - I think.

It's not guaranteed, there are results that could put both Leinster and Munster out.

no its not guaranteed but only an extraordinary sequence would see both of them out

Leinster need only a losing bonus point to top group

A leinster win will guarantee Munster are through

For them to both go out Both of them would have to lose and get no BP

then London irish would have to win with a bonus point

and Ospreys beat leicester with a BP

I think its taken for granted that clermont will beat Viadana with BP

even then it would have a few teams on same points (Leinster, Munster and London irish) for one spot

Interstingly, there also seems to be a formula that would see Leinster home to Munster in the Quarter Finals

A munster leinster final would be a great event, it always is(especially when leinster win!)

But in all fairness lets not count our chickens just yet. Still two more games the second of which is a knock out quarter final.

The best of luck for both teams until then....

Losing a game is not an "extraordinary sequence".

You said that only an "extraordinary sequence" would see them both out.
    Oh relax.
I thought you were referring to the comp, not the last round of it.

As usual, people here are arguing over nothing to prove nothing else.
All the talk about Leinster v Munster semi-finals is typical page-filling obvious tosh.

my orignial point with this was rubbish the notion of trying to predict potential matches months in advance. There are far too many variables to take into consideration. Obviously watching two irish teams go at it in a final would be better than a semi-final, but its far too early for the media to start on about this regardless of how good the teams are.

example of such being Scarlets and LI last weekend. We as a group of fans should hope for and believe in success but not be so arrogent as to assume success for both teams and start predicting semi final fixtures.

Perhaps you are reacting a little OTT over the article; after all it simply says that the two teams "could" meet again in the competition this year and that they might be at croker again

Its hardly saying that its a certainty or that the teams are invincible or whatever

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 195 ✭✭happyfriday74

It looks like both teams will make the 1/4's but who knows what could happen then.

No team can presume too much, look what happened to LI getting lazy vs the scarlets(so happy for them, what a comeback!) last weekend and even Brive put up much more of a fight then expected.

Aside from this a knock out quarter final anything can happen.

While once both teams are through the 1.4ers the rivilary can flare, the paper start their "clash of civilisations" hype and the minority of idiot supporters from both side can start calling each other D4 snobs/potato chompers until then let both camps focus on the considerable tasks at hand.

Meh. A Munster/Leinster final now would be interesting.

I dont think I could handle another one.
Hopefully neither meet and if one is knocked out then everyone can still cheer for the other team.

I still have a huge fear of meeting the Tigers who although have half a team of journeymen seem to play like an international team.

Yeah they're warming up nicely, playing better rugby then last year and their injury list is shortening. Them or Clermont would be my least desirable.

if either team lose without getting a bonus point they could easily go out as chances are 2 will go through from pool 3 should see at least 2 teams on 20 points and could possibly see the 2 score 21 points, so hardly an extraordinary sequence

True, but for Leinster it would have to be a loss by greater than 7, with LI scoring four tries or more, which would be a fairly rare occasion. Not saying it won't happen, it very much could, but its still a fairly large one.

The last time Leinster conceded four tries in the HC was away to Toulouse in 2007-2008. Hell, the Brive game was the first time in 14 HC matches they conceded more than one.

Its obviously possibly, but pretty unlikely. That in and of itself wouldn't necessarily put them out either.

Oh I know the stats, I just hate getting cocky around this time of the year. Mostly because the quarters can throw out some weird results, and always make me nervous. Nothing worse than people getting cocky as hell coming out of the group, and then their team gets hammered.

It's not cocky to suggest we won't get hammered. It's realistic.
