Taking A Year Out...

    Hi all,

Not sure if this should go here or in the independent travel forum, please bump if needed!

I’ve been wanting to go for a long trip, 6 months to a year for a while for the usual reasons, see the world, friends have gone and they say it’s great, expand your mind, meet new people etc. I’m thinking the sooner the better as the longer it’s left the more responsibilities tie you down. I’m 25, and I have a steady job at the minute..

I find my main problem though is biting the bullet and actually doing it. So I’ve two main questions:
    1. Does anyone have experience with cutting loose, leaving the job etc and just going? I’ve a car loan to pay off, a big one, so I’m thinking I can’t stir until that’s cleared at least. Is it hard to do?
    2. Can you get the same experiences from taking 2-3 weeks every year to go to different spots than you would if you took it in one big chunk?
    Thanks a mil,

    Scráib

I took 4 months off work a few years ago to go to Australia. 1/2 of this was paid leave whilst the rest was unpaid. I saw most of the country in that time. What age are you? What about your employment situation? Would they give you the time off? Do you like your job?

I'm 25, employed for the past 2.5 years. I'm thinking of leaving my job actually, but because of the car loan and a few other financial constraints I can't go anywhere this year. Next year is a possibility.

I had an idea in my head that if I change jobs this year I could do exactly what you did. Ideally I'd hit South America or Africa. Oz doesn't really hold much interest for me for some reason!
