Hi all, this is a big favour to anyone who cna blog. I am looking to start a blog and use it as a website. I know nothing about it and have loads but its all gargon to me. the domeain i want is available so I am going to purchase that later. What do I do? My friend suggested a blog in WordPress, which says it is easy but OMG! it is full of explainations and instructions. I am afraid of making a mess of it. I am however prepared to research and put time into it.

What exactly is web hosting? When I but the domain name is that it for the year or is there recurring charges?

Could some one please give me simple step by step :) english to explain the process and the best way to do this. I am correct in saying that if I have a blog and am constantly adding info to it it will keep it high on the search engines?

Sorry if the questions are confussing or simple but this is such a new area to me. I should pick it up though as I am determined to get the hang of it.

I'd recommend trying WordPress or Blogger - before using your own domain (if you're not familiar with the setup). If you go to Blogger.com or WordPress.com you'll be up and going immediately with either a yourname.wordpress.com or yourname.blogspot.com. It will be up instantly. Then you can start playing around with the options. Even if you don't publish anything it's good to see how it works. There are a lot of popular bloggers using wordpress.com or blogspot.com address. Content is king, they say.

When, if, you're ready to buy a domain name you'll need a hosting site to basically "hold all your files". I'm not familiar with the Irish or UK ones, but almost any will do. Once you have a hosting company, installing WordPress is literally as easy as uploading it to the directory (hosting company). My hosting company is GoDaddy.com and I just had to click a button and they installed WordPress for me.

As for increasing your search index (Google PageRank) you're on your own. If you figure it out let us all know. It's much more than just making frequent posts.

Start off with WordPress.com (fullly hosted and nothing for you to worry about).. once you've started blogging and have decided if it is something you want to actually do and feel confident, then look into hosting and moving to a self installed WordPress.org blog :)
