Carer for elderly person

Does anyone know how I could get a job looking after an elderly person. I watched a programme the other day about it and there are so many old people who don't want to go into a nursing home but can't look after themselves.

I don't have a "carer" qualification but its not exactly impossible work, it's more common sense.

Is there a website or anything - I can only find agencies which seem to charge extortionate rates.

Help/advice is much appreciated. Thanks :)

A good starting point would be FETAC accredited healthcare assistant courses that would give you a formal qualification. Training will be a mix of academic and work experience. While doing that you could try doing some voluntary work in a nursing home or with people with disabilities. Another starting point is approach an agency that employs home helps, healthcare assistants etc. Ask them what would they advise. I would not advise taking any job without having an understanding of the client group and their needs. So qualifications are important to give you that basic knowledge. You'd be caring for older persons with varied personal and healthcare needs. You could be faced with persons with challenging behaviour. You could be putting yourself and the person you are caring for at risk. If a person has any kind of mobility needs, you will need to have manual handling training to prevent injury to yourself or others. Manual handling and the use of equipment would be taught in healthcare assistant courses.
