    Hey there,

Seeing as how everyone on this board seemed to wee in their pants from excitement with the tonto vs mockler challenge, here's an event that'll get your juices flowing again. The Dublin Messenger crew are doing the Goldsprints again in the Bernard Shaw on Saturday February 13th. After petethedrummer's admittedly stunning win last time, our second placed boy wonder Stein will have to get back in training to regain some of the lost bragging rights for dublinfgss.

The event is a fundraiser for Haiti, so come on down and have a spin for a very deserving cause.

I will definitely try to make this one, even if it is just to have a few drinks!

    Check out the new site:
    www.dubsprints.wordpress.com

Here you'll find rules, news, previous results, photos and movies. You can also sign up for the next event here.

    See you on the 13th!

The last goldsprints is probably the last time I was on bike. :o

    Right. This is on Saturday.

Who here is representing the boards crew?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

Its on like Donkey Kong. I am looking forward to this. Anyone bringing a proper club sprinter friend or a cadence-o-meter?

A bit more info on the event:
Qualifiers will be starting at 6pm... they want to have us done and dusted by 9 but i think that is pants and will keep going till they turn off the power.

Bernard Shaw will be showing the rugby so if you want to come down early and watch it there will hopefully be some blingy bikes and a parts market out the back before we get to the racing.

If anyone would still like to pre-register(purely for my records) please visit the sign-up page here:
    http://dubsprints.blogspot.com/2010/01/goldsprint-sign-up-form.html

    Rules etc. are here:
    www.dubsprints.wordpress.com

And remember this is for a good cause!!!

Top 2 riders from this event and the next event in April will automatically qualify for the knockout stages of the final to be held in June.

2Wheels in Sandymount are (to be confirmed) gonna sponsor a nice set of wheels/frame to the overall winner.

Winner on the night will receive a beautiful ceramic 'Bikin' Irish' beer stein!

    Looking forward to it.

Small question, I'm not looking to win but don't want to make an ass of myself, having never gone fixed is there a chance to just turn the cranks for 5 minutes to get an idea of feel? Or are there warm ups?

There will be time to warm up, no worries. There's no set time, but you'll have a couple of minutes to adjust your saddle height and spin the pedals, sprint a bit and get a feel for it. If you need more time just ask one of us, that's no problem.:)

Probably the most important thing to remember is: Don't pedal backwards!
This causes the back wheel to come off the rollers in less than one full revolution due to some law of physics I'm not familiar with :)
You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly, once you're finished sprinting just kinda let your legs go slack, don't try and fight the spin, the cranks will stop turning smoothly and quickly.

I've only been fixed a few times myself but its not like riding one on the road. It takes negligble effort to get your legs to stop. You won't have to even think about it.

As long as my pants don't get chewed up by the drivetrain and I have to cycle home in my boxers I will be happy. Have you been training hard for this Pete, lots of pressure, all those fixie riders out to get your crown :)

    Roll your trousers up.

No training, haven't cycled at all in January. I couldn't begin to describe what I'm going through at work. But I reckon I'll get around the same times again. It will probably be even more excruciating on the legs in the following days.

    Will there be masseuses?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,234 ✭✭✭flickerx

Will there be masseuses? I am not sure, but there will be lots of sweet liquor to ease the pain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

So who exactly out of the boards contingent is going? Flickerx (are you on the fixie side?), pete, dubmess (also fixie side?). I just "de-Freded" myself purposely for this (half truth).

I'll be there alright but I wont be racing again, I'll leave that up to the youngsters from dublinfgss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭dubmess

Looking forward to this evening, hope we get a good number showing up, please come down and show your support, 6pm to 9pm, good times :)

Right, heading out right after the match,I'll probably miss the actual goldsprints if it started at 6, but I'll try and get in and watch anyway.

will the gearing stay the same for future contests?
any chance of 14/48 or higher?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

Oh dear. I was too slow.:( The fixieists prevailed, with youngsters from their developmental squad.

Apologies to the boardsies I drunkenly texted late on Saturday night gloating about our victory.

Congrats to peadar (username fixie here) on his victory. Dubmess will have the video of it up soon.

    Results and video:

    http://dubsprints.wordpress.com/upcomingresults/haiti-fundraiser-results/

It was so bloody cold out there nobody could get a fast time. We raised €130, which is alright considering.

Think we'll change venues for the next event, bring it inside and get somewhere that will give us the whole night to play.

Rollapaluza in the UK have been in touch and are offering our 2 fastest men and 2 fastest women spots in their national final later this year. I shall post with more details as I get them.

The gearing won't be changing, it's not about the gearing. This is a specific form of racing which requires a different approach, you must adapt to it, as it's not going to change for you :)

So yesterday I went out and bought a set of rollers and I'm watching that video on a loop doing high speed cadence work....THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.

It's not that bad - you got to the final. A bit of lycra next time will make all the difference:)

    Lumen bring your aero helmet.

    Lumen bring your aero helmet.

Fantastic idea, I think it would really help.

I would actually like to turn up to one of these in full Kaiku kit, only I would have to be very sure of winning.

Out of interest has anyone gotten sick on the bike yet? Booze and pushing yourself to the limit for 20-30 seconds cant be good for your stomach at all.

Who would own up to getting sick after 30 seconds on a bike?:D

It was the booze and the drugs that did it, honestly.

what trainer did you get pete?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,604 ✭✭✭petethedrummer

I was only messing I actually didn't get one. I would buy a set of rollers, but with my limited attention span I doubt I'd ever use them after I had mastered getting up on them.

Really I just need to get back to drafting buses up the Malahide Road. There are three short rises from Fairfiew to the Goblet Pub I used to hammer up at the end of my commute which is what my sprint training amounted too. Trying to draft a bus is an added incentive to go extra fast.

Bear in mind if getting a trainer rather than rollers, you can't put a fixed gear bike on a trainer. Or more appropriately, shouldn't, as you can certainly physically attach one. I believe any wheel resistance damages them. Mine had a warning about this in the instructions- no fixed gears and don't brake.

    ok,that makes me look stupid

right so was having a look at rollers today but most of them seem way overpriced, anybody here have rollers or recommend any?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 282 ✭✭dubmess

The rollers we use are Kreitler, but they cost an arm and a leg, not sure if there is such a thing as a cheap set of rollers. Cheapest I saw was around €130 on chain reaction.
