Hey just wondering if you have been receiving Job Seekers Allowence will your new employer know this when you start a new job?
Is there any way to keep a new employer from knowing you have been receiving Social Welfare?

Generally no. However, in some circumstances they will be able to guess or will be informed.

    1. If your P45 is dated from a few months ago, they are likely to know.

    2. There are some programmes that support people in back to work situations. However, I imagine you would have to tell them you were unemployed for them to take part in it.

where exactly would they get this information from to know that you were on Social Welfare? Do Social Welfare tell them or what?

Sorry Victor are you saying that they will not know a person was on Social Welfare?

While they may not technically 'know' for definite, they may guess if you've been unemployed for a time.

My question would be - what difference does it make anyway? And is it any business of theirs? No.

If he welfare payments have nothing to do with your employment with them then no, they would not know, and Dept. Social Welfare would have no reason to tell them. Thats between you and Welfare.

Under the data protection act they couldn't tell them, let alone being an invasion of privacy etc etc

You will be giving them your P45 and you will need to contact the Tax Office when you go back to work and they will send your new employer notification of your earnings and tax up to the date you resumed employment. The taxable amount of the Unemployment Benefit will be included in the earnings figure but as far as I know the source of those taxable earnings will not be included- just simply the amount. The accountants at your new work place will be able to draw conclusions of course. If you have been out of work for 6 months or more and have gotten a full time job, there is some new scheme whereby your employer is excused paying PRSI for you for some time (without it affecting your entitlements) so there is a chance that, if they spot that likelihood, they might want to avail of it.

When a new certificate of tax credits is issued to your employer..... it will show your standard allowances less a deduction for JSA, so yes as far as I know it is actually printed on your Cert of tax credits.

Only sure way to find out would be to ask the Tax Office what info will be on the tax certificate update which they will issue.

They won't know before they have employed you, without you telling them.

    But why does it matter?

In fairness, you're coming here asking a question, we've all answered you. How many different ways do you want the question answered?

I'm sure I could find out how long you were on the dole if I had your P45 or tax cert. So in essence yes, they could find out if they wanted to.

Plus, as has been stated, it will be on your tax cert when issued to your employer.

Why don't you call the tax office and/or Dept. Social Welfare and ask them?

Can an employer find out if you've been unemployed? Almost certainly yes. Unless you start the new job on the 1st January there is going to be something on your tax records for that year to give it away once you start.

Can they find out before you start? They can make a pretty good guess from your previous employment dates.

Again, why does it matter though?

Mary what your worried about, im not sure. But if your where on social welfare or not should have nothing to do with your new job.
If your worried that you worked and still claimed your JSB, well then i would be more worried about the social welfare finding out.
But considering the amount of people who lost their jobs over the last year or so, i would think most people starting in new jobs have been on some sort of welfare.
