    Hi folks,

Could somebody please advise me how to rid my laptop of these alerts as described in the title. At this point my laptop is practically unsuable in account of these alerts popping up constantly. It is Windows Vista package on laptop. If any further information is needed I will try to provide as best I can

Also once I have removed these alerts could somebody recommend a good reputable antivirus software I could download for free of internet please.

    Many thanks in advance

    this is the simple way:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/disable-security-center-popup-notifications-in-windows-vista/

Try that first and come back if there are more...

Could you provide a screen shot of the alerts you describe. That way we can decide whether the alerts are legit or not, an then the best advice on ridding you of them.

To make a screen shot, wait until a few popups have appeared, then press print screen on your keyboard, and open MS Paint, click edit>paste, and save the image, then upload it here.

In addition to showing us examples of the alerts, your PC might be loaded with crapware by the manufacturer - eg free trial anti-virus rubbish. Backstreet pc manufacturers get money from software vendors to install their crapware - you can use http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ to remove same.

As for non-annoying anti-virus software try http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ - free download. Assuming you are using Windows.

Thanks for replies thus far folks. Its practically impossible to open up any program on the laptop at this stage. Have to restart each time and if I don't get to open the program before the security alerts kick in then the security alerts seem to prevent me from running various programs. I have attached a screen shot of one of the alerts I am getting in the word document below. In addition there are little blow up ballons with windows security alerts appearing in the bottom toolbar...they do not show on the screen dump for some reason.

Syklops I attached a word document to show screenprints of the messages I am getting. In addition the is a Windows security alert at bottom of screen which is telling me application cannot be executed any time I try to run a new program. It also says the file wuasclt.exe is infected whatever that means. The program giving all the hassle appears to be antivirus live from what I can make out.

Probe thanks for links. Tried running PC decrapifier but to no avail it would appear.

If the anti-virus messages are correct then it appears you are under attack by something. For the moment, I would unplug the computer from the internet, clcik block to all the antivirus messages, and run a full scan with your antivirus.

I Would also run the tools probe mentioned while offline, and see if it picks anything up. If it does find something, let us know. If it does not, let us know also as it could be something new.

    Thanks

I bet the OPs computer if infected with 'Personal anti virus' .
Download spyware doctor and it will clear it up

Early days yet folks but I think, hope (and pray) that the Spyware Doctor as advised by TirNaNog has sorted out my problem. Downloaded it, and between treats and actual viruses quite a number were detected and it wiped the slate clean for me. Rebooted the laptop have it running for half an hour and it appears to be running A1 with no more nasty pop ups. I will reply again if the problem resurfaces but hopefully such will not be the case for me.

Once again many thanks to all who took the time to reply, I am most appreciative to ye all for the kind assistance.

It is not recommended to open a Microsoft Word or Acrobat document from an untrusted source! It could be the vector for the malware.... hence people who open the doc could become infected. It is safer to use an image file such as .png, .jpg. .gif for this purpose.

If you are still searching for a solution try http://www.avast.com/ - it is one of the most effective virus removers and is free.

It is Czech - much better than most of the American rubbish out there.

to echo probe I forgot to tell ye about this. This is a free virus remover and checker from one of the top three antivirus supppliers in the market. Go to http://www.eset.ie/onlinescan/ and run that. Its free and will remove a lot of rubbish from your PC. If you like it their software is cheap too on the site..
