how to understand a broken relationship

Hello, I wrote a thread earlier today but it seems to be gone, I broke up recently with my bf its wasn't over anything in particular, neither of us cheated. We had been having a great time together, as he said himself enjoying each other's company, having chats and sex was good but to be honest felt that we were in a rut in that we weren't doing anything new and we didn't try either. Now we are texting each other and sometimes its like when we first start to date and he did tell me he misses me and vice versa. He has moved to another city and over the weekend we were texting and he would send me a message at night going "nite" which I know doesn't mean anything we use to sign them off with xx but not now and I wonder what is going on in his head, I would take him back in a heartbeat but would just want us to communicate more. Has anyone any advice??
