    Hi folks

Have a skoda octavia 1.4 and its booked in for a service thursday. A light came on the dash tonight.

Its descriiption of the fault is "a fault exists in the exhaust relevant component. The engine management system selects an emergency program which enables you to drive to the nearest garage...Emmissions workshop will come up on computer in garage"

I have a day of running around wednesday does anyone know what this light actually means and is it safe to drive the car...

I will phone the garage tomorrow but just to help me sleep tonight.....#

    Any help appreciated.

ps: Its the light that looks like an engine...

That light comes on to indicate that a fault has been detected by the engine management system. Any one of a number of things could cause this so you really need to have someone plug in to diagnose it. Its not necessarily something complex and is often simple enough. Wait and see what the garages who are servicing it say about it.

    ENGINE MANAGEMENT WARNING LIGHT

Also called MIL light (Malfunction Indicator Lamp). Comes on when a sensor is giving the computer (ECU), information out side of its normal parameters (faulty sensor), or if a misfire is detected (faulty coil etc.). The car can be driven, if running ok (See Misfire if engine running rough.) But the engine management system should be checked ASAP. You will need EOBD diagnostic equipment to find cause, however it is worth checking simple things like engine oil level, EGR valve, stop light switches and wiring for chaffing etc. as these can all put the light on, use search by make to see if any known problems.
Don’t drive to far if engine running badly as it may damage the catalytic converter.

Its probably a faulty coil, i had the same problem with my last octavia, everytime the garage covered the cost, even though the car was out of warranty.

No doubt the cat converter is expensive..... It is a bit rough alright. It has slowed down....

    hi

sorry to jump on your bones here..

But i have a warning light that i don;t know what it means and i cant find it in the book

The car is running fine as far as i can see.

It looks like a tear drop over the outline of say, how you might draw a pot.

It says oil ok when i turn engine on and temperature seems fine. I added water to the windscreen wash container yesterday just in case

I;ve no job at the moment so money is tight. I have tried to find out via the web, but no use so far.

Man thanks if you can help me

Hi, I know this was over a year ago since your post, but can you tell me how long your warrenty was out? The coils went in my Polo which was out of warrenty by 4 months & VW covered it, but my Octavia which seems to be having the same coil issue too is an '07 so out of warrenty quite a while...i bought both cars brand new so its quite annoying, but they're all under VW group so hoping they will cover the Octavia too...the issue with the Polo coils was a faulty batch, maybe the same for Octavia...thanks!
