Hip injury help/suggestions

    Hi all,

I'm a former karate student, trained from age 12 to 19. During this time I picked up a bit of a dodgy hip (due to an over stretch, feet together, knees in butterfly position and a sensei pressing down on my knee...) but it seemed to heal and didn't bother me too much. I gave up training () and attempted to return at age 27 (I know you are starting to fall asleep now but bare with me :D). Then the hip injury really got in the way...
I mainly feel it when I attempt to do a round house kick. Its difficult to describe but the pain feels like it is 'in' my hip and after training (at night) the pain run down the back of my leg and into my lower back. Pressing deep into my hip relieves it sometimes. Sometimes I hear a click noise when I am trying to stretch out.
I gave up Karate again because of this. And also because the sensei was expecting me to train at black belt level again...which makes no sense. I dont believe in pushing students through grades....you're only as good as how often (and well) you train.
I am now thinking of taking up TKD, so I can start at the beginning.I've chosen what seems to be a very reputable club. I did tell them that I did karate before, but have not mentioned at what level I was - I dont want any expectations.
Does anyone have any tips so this hip problem does not affect me? I know TKD involves a lot more leg work, so I am very nervous I wont be able to kick well.
Any help at all is much appreciated..:o

Seeing as how you are open to trying another art, why don't you try another art that does not emphasis round house kicks or something that strains your hips?

Have you tried going to a physiotherapist?

You need to get yourself to a doctor to sort out your underlying hip problem, before even thinking about any sort of serious exercise, let alone something as tough on the hips as taekwondo.

If it flares up after eight years, there is something wrong that needs proper diagnosis and attention.

As a seperate issue you should check if the instructor who injured you is linked to any National or International bodies and report them. It's probably too late for any legal action, but reporting it could save another minor from an injury.

In relation to the time limit for bringing an action it is two years from the date of knowledge or date that a reasonable person aught to have knowledge or sought professional advice. I think you are well out of time for that now.

A Physio should be able to diagnose the problem, or refer you to someone who can. It sounds a little like sciatica, but I'm only going on what you posted above.

    Thanks you guys....

I am thinking of definitley seeing a physio, as I really, really miss martial arts. There were so many benefits to taking part...and I'm looking forward to starting again, but with a really good club.
With regard to my previous trainer, as an adult I can see that that truly was a McDojo now - I mean, they were firm believers in double grading etc. They were affiliated with Sensei M Kawasowe, SKFI. I did notice as the years went by, there was an abundance of ''instructors' popping up, some as young as 16.....
I have no interest in seeking compensation anyway, I just want to get better and go back to learning.;)

    Physio here I come...:o

Just for the record, I have had something similar and been to several physio's....

If you have Insurance and this isn't paranoia but I'd see a doctor first.....

Get an X-ray to ensure it's not a bone problem

Get a MRI to identify whether it is muscle based

Get a CT Scan to identify nerve compression

Ultrasound isn't neccessary but I'd definitely request these while or before you get physiotherapy.... because it's a pain in the ass waiting for appointments.

There has been a problem with my leg for years and I believe it's actually a nerve problem you might have.... They are often hard to detect at the beginning.

I'm awaiting to see a neurologist to confirm if it is a nerve problem because conservative treatment hasn't worked.

    Hi OP,
If you're on the northside of Dublin, pm me and I'll give you the details of a guy we go to and highly recommend... all the guys have had really good results, I had great relief after just one session from a painful 10 year old shoulder injury that no one else could help me with.
