OH is in to photography and all that so is in need of a new computer. She's had a Mac before but it died so is on the lookout for a new one. Is it a good/bad idea to buy a second hand Mac? Is it the done thing?

Also, what would you guys recommend for around the €1000 mark?

    Thanks in advance!

A refurbished imac 24" screen would be really good for photography for under €1000.

    Here's a link to them....

24" iMac is a beauty. Only problem is the lack of expansion, which seriously bugs me. But i got it free from Apple so I should stop complaining! I have the 2.8Ghz version with 4Gb RAM, if I put it under load it can seriously slow down, but your not gonna get a btter mac for under 1000.

There's actually a very nice 24" on that link for 1149, which IMO would be an incredible buy, as you get a 1yr warranty with that as well. if you could stretch another but, the best machine on that page, going bang for buck here, is the 27" for 1279. That would be a seriously nice machine for photography. there were issues with yellow tinting on the 27" screens, but they fixed that now, and the ones in the refurb store would be ones that were sent back and then fixed, as it was quite a simple problem as far as i'm aware. If I was buying a new mac from that store, there would be no question about the 27". However I'd say snap it up now before anyone else does, then worry about saving the extra few bob if ya can...

PC World has a MacBook for sale under €1000 euro at the moment which might be worth looking at. Another option might be to consider a Mac Mini, I have one and absolutely love it. You can use any screen, keyboard or mouse with it, although the wireless Mac keyboard and mouse are pretty tasty. It is also relatively easy to upgrade the Mac mini if your somewhat tech savvy. Its your cheapest option for a new Mac, will come with snow Leopard, can display in full HD, comes with Wifi and Bluetooth, lots of USB, what more could you want from it. Its also very small and stylish. You can run bootcamp on it too if you want to run another OS such as Vista, Windows 7 or a distribution of Linux. Before anyone starts criticising the hardware specs, Mac OS's are much more efficient at utilising the hardware they run on so they dont need so much resources.

i have a 24" mac, i have had MBP and MB, but nothing compare to the 24".

its excellent for photos and video, if she is serious about photography well then for me their is only one option, a 24" imac with upgraded photoshop.

Keep an eye on the Mac outlet store for sub €1000 bargains. There's a thread here somewhere about it.
