Can someone please inform me of the steps to take on reclaiming motor tax back.

My car was wrote off last week by my insurance company. The tax was valid until November this year.

Call to local Garda station, get form. Sign form....send to motor tax office.

You sign that the car is scrapped etc. The Garda witnesses it. You send (or take) the form and the tax disc (Car must have 3 months tax on it) to the motor taxation office and they will refund you the money. It must be the same local authority from where the Tax was issued.

Do I not need some sort of proof that the car is scrapped.

If the car was scrapped and the insurance payed out, don't the insurance company own the car now? meaning the tax is theirs to claim. Correct me if I'm wrong here.

I think you could be correct, as the car might not actually be scrapped at all - it's up to the insurance company what they want to do with it.

I just spoke to the insurance guy and he said I can stick the RF120 form in once Shannon send the relevant documentation back.:(

I was in a bad accident in 2009 off a motorbike which left me unable to drive my car so I thought it should be possible to reclaim the tax but when I called Nutgrove they told me it wasn't possible. It was only months later that I came across the form on Dublin City councils website and thankfully they accepted the mistake even though it was hard to prove but I had all the documentation to show it was not possible for me to have used the car.

Anyway, the form is available here
