Wow....with that and a new Cineworld in the works for the docklands, the cinema scene is certainly on the up.

Good news for cinema-goers. I hadn't heard about the Cineworld in the docklands - has that been confirmed?

It would be great if this led to bit more competition among cinemas; I don't mind paying high prices if the service is good (Cineworld is, for my money, the best cinema in Dublin - the unlimited card, lots of starting times, lots of screens and a good variety of films). However other cinemas simply aren't worth the money. I do love the Savoy for its old-fashioned vibe, but seriously, when you have to crane your neck to stare at the screen even when you're eight rows from the front, there's something wrong.

So yeah, hope this new cinema gets planning permission and looking forward to seeing what it's like.

Nothing about when it might eventually open though.

I always found it strange that there was no real cinima in the south of the city centre.I'd say this is going to make going to the cinema so much handier!

Said summer 2011 in their press release.

Seems possible judging by the time they turned the new cinema in the Swan centre around.

Amen. I only ever saw an imax film once (in Parnell Street back in the day) and - with blockbusters going that way - it'd be nice to have the opportunity to see it in this country.

    Cineworld Docklands maybe?

where would it go though, I didn't think there was any free space there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

It's going on the top level of the car park apparently.

About time and all. Summer 2011 though. In irish terminology that means 2015 at the earliest. Oh well. At least it's on the horizon.

Hopefully they call it the Green Cinema. All we need is for the Dandelion market to re-open!

Right smack dab in the middle of town
I've found a paradise that's trouble proof (up on the roof)
And if this world starts getting you down
    There's room enough for two
Up on the roof (up on the roof)

    Hey Arnold, what a legend!

I really wish they'd have later showings in cinemas!

Cineworld is the latest, with showings til about 22.30

But abroad the last show is usually 00.00

Good for an alternative to a night out in town

And someone please gimme a damn protein shake smoothie bar!

    That is all.

The cinemas would probably be open later if public transport ran later than it does currently. If I'm going to a movie any time after 9 in town, I have to check the duration to make sure I'll make it to the bus! I've even had to leave a movie early to run for the bus :(

I think Vue in Liffey Valley has late showings at the weekend, I remember going to a movie quite late there once.

nah they closed the iMAX in Belfast around 2007. I was there over Christmas and no luck :( (seeing if Avatar was in iMAX :o)

We can only hope that someone invests in an iMAX cinema and shows all the blockbusters here, not just wildlife documentaries that bring in a class of school children once every blue moon :( Surely if it's popular enough for Sweden to have one then we should have one too? I imagine Cinemas are quite popular in ireland. Maybe we just don't have a big enough population.

There are ~8 million in London, 12 if you count the outer areas. Dublin has about....3 million including surrounding areas so I can see why :(

Only if you count most of the country as "surrounding areas"!

Unfortunately, there's just not that much on IMAX worth seeing. The only time I recall in the last 10 years a film I wanted to see was "The Dark Knight". When did the IMAX at Parnell St close down?

As a holder of a Cineworld unlimited pass I welcome the news that there will be an alternative venue for my frequent movie patronage.
The Parnell St. Cineworld is such a scumbag magnet at the moment that half the films I see these days are a frustrating experience spoiled by loud chavs. I know it's hard to go to any movie these days without some tosser (if you're smart and the cimema isn't too full they can be avoided) making it a miserable experience but it has gotten particularly bad there and management just shrug if you complain.

Yeah. I feel the same way about the place... toilets are way too small for a cinema of it's size as well and they're always filthy.

It was never really designed to be a 17 screen cinema I suppose.. it's sort of the 10 Screen Virgin Cinema and the old Imax knocked together.

Delighted to hear this news but if its open by 2011 I'll be amazed! I welcome a break in the monopoly of city cenre screens that Cineworld in Parnell Street has. It is currently the only fully wheelchair accessible multiplex in the city centre so I go there begrudgingly. It is in need of a serious revamp and as someone mentioned previously it does have an element of clientele that can be possibly described as undesirable, especially at night (It is not alone in this regard of course!) If I had the choice I'd never go there again.

Luckily I live around the corner from Dundrum so thats my regular haunt.

The Savoy would be brilliant if it had a lift, as would the Screen in College St. I haven't been in the IFI since the 3rd screen was open there but it doesn't show the kind of movies you would expect to see in a multiplex.

    Bring it on

Haha, yeah that is the one bad thing about having a cinema near parnell street.

Funny, the average North American audience are like chavs - except louder. Went to see Book of Eli the other night and there were numerous loud conversations going on around me, some nothing to do with the movie. One guy in particular decided to read everything that came up on screen - signs, adverts "Beware of the Dog" he bellowed at one stage - I can read you f*cking twit!!!! So fecking annoying.

Dublin city centre desperately needs more cinemas, especially the south inner city. It's about time!

Delighted to hear this, yeah Parnell st is a fair bit of a trek when you live on the other side of town! and iv had really loud obnoxious people sit in front of me in Parnell St aswell, it really ruins your enjoyment of the film :(

definitly in favour of more cineworld's, means i wouldn't have to trek to parnell st. when i wanna use my unlimited card. if they took over IMC in dun laoghaire that'd be great!
