CA Aug output consistency

Quick question lads; The output on my CA Aug is quite inconsistent; I've gotten readings of 260fps up to 300fps mark (output generally in the region of 270fps/0.25g bb).
The only upgrades have been tighter barrel & new hopup rubber.
Is the problem likely to be air leakage around the hopup or do you think I would need to look deeper?
Any tips on improving the seal around the hopup (if that is the issue)?

This may sound silly, but check that your backplate is secure. If it isn't, the gearbox may be afforded some movement backwards.

I second that suggestion; my AUG's backplate (phwoar) mounting (phwoar) screw-holes (phwoar) are broken, so the component making the difference between hardly-working and working-really-well is a stub of pencil shoring the gap.

    Hehehehe professional. :P

Thanks for the replies. I presume you are referring to the backplate separating the mech box from the battery compartment? It is secure, i've never taken the mech box out but i'll remember that one for the future.

I put electricians tape around the end of the hop-up and it has given a jump in fps; there is still some inconsistency in the output but seems it might be the direction to go in.

Hmmm, that's a little weak for a CA AUG... Take off the backplate and add a foam or rubber spacer between it and the gearbox (5mm of a stiff material or 10mm of a softer one should do). It'll push the gearbox forwards as far as possible and give it the best interface with the hopup.

Also, is your barrel properly clean? A dirty barrel can lead to bizarrely inconsistent fps readings.

I'll try that with the padding..

Just put a new barrel in it.

Thought I'd post this as it may be useful to others.

I taped up the end of the hopup and the output from over 40 shots with 3 different bbs (2 diff weights) was very consistent at 1.05-1.07J.

I retaped to "loosen" the seal and got consistent shots at 0.73-0.75J. Frustrating. :(

I think with the hopup taped to the max the hopup unit was pushed back further and may have engaged better with the mech box. Will need to test further.

Oh you steal what I tell you is wrong with your aug and act all knowlageable Jamesy... tut tut :P Next you'll be advising people on what m4 to buy and what your fav ris toy is :P

Sadly the ris mounted m60 isnt out yet...

If all else fails op, Some teflon tape around the hop to barrel join is useful, and make sure its seated cleanly to the feed nipple in the magwell, they can get damaged.

I added some foam as per Treadhead's suggestion, it did seem to help a bit, hopefully there isn't too much pressure on those dainty little plate screws.
I had to add additional tape around the hop-up and now she's shooting around 280fps (0.25g).
Thx for the advise guys n' gal.
