Presario F765EM, optical drive issue

I've had this laptop since around July 2008 and has worked flawlessly until yesterday.

I rebooted yesterday after my CD burning software didn't detect my drive (was trying to burn an audio CD) and then the laptop would not go past POST, nor would it enter the BIOS. After some messing with it I discovered it went to my GRUB menu as normal and loaded fine when the optical drive was removed from the slot. I then tried with two other confirmed working optical drives from other laptops and it will not go past POST with any optical drive inserted, save for one time and neither Ubuntu nor Windows 7 could detect an optical drive at all.

It would seem that there's a hardware issue here, but not sure as to the cause.

Enclosed is my original drive (at the bottom) and the other two drives that are known to work above it. I posted this on techsupportforums as well and someone asked about jumpers at the back of the drives, so putting in a picture anyway.

Not really absolutely essential to have an optical drive, but since this laptop doesn't seem to be able to boot via USB, I am unable to try out new Linux distros when I have some free time.
