On the o2 website I noticed they said there's now unlimited Internet browsing, there used to be 1.2 gig. I recently went on bill with iPhone from pay as u go. Does anyone know is unlimited browsing for everyone, not just new customers?

well o2 site is down at the moment, but if it's then it's a great news, there were lots of talk about the new data packs.
it should apply to all, old or new customer IMO.

this thread on the talk202 forums makes interesting reading....some saying the unlimited data applies only to new customers, others that you have to sign a new 18 month contract to avail of it...

    This is from the T&C's...
New and existing customers who avail of the O2 Advance price plan with unlimited data for mobile internet browsing are subject to an 18 month contract.

EDIT: Looks like a new 18 month contract is definately required to change to an unlimited data plan.....shambles....always a feckin catch...

O2 are the biggest joke and disgrace I have ever had the misforture of dealing with. Coverage is poor, internet speeds cat, they never implemented visual voicemail or tethering and now this crap. A new 18 month contract to change price plans. You must be kidding me? I changed price plans on meteor numerous times no problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,384 ✭✭✭Eire Go Brach

Oh crap. I just requested to change my plan. Was told nothing about new 18 months. Will this effect my upgrade during the summer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 637 ✭✭✭Dannyboi3k

Yeah I'd imagine so, it requires a new contract .. :o correct me if I'm wrong

It's getting harder and harder for me to wait for the 4G in June.

Changing plan and entering a new 18 month contract, according to 02 forum, does not effect upgrades.

    Oh and unlimited = 3gb

Not only do they get you sign a new 18mth contract JUST to change tariff BUT you also sign that you will not use this allowance to tether. Its a two fold step to renew contracts and start charging for tethering.

O2 argued in the past that 18mth contracts were required instead of standard 12mth to subsidise expensive handsets. Fair enough, but now they require the longer 18mth contract just to change plans!!!

Unsure if Vodafone will be any better but definitely worth holding off a month or two for their official launch and/or Apple 4G iPhone.

It's getting harder and harder for me to wait for the 4G in June.

Some rumours point to an earlier release due to increased competition in hardware from Google etc. Thursday might say a lot as Apple are also rumoured to show off the next iPhone OS and Apple Tablet.

The battery in my iPhone has gone from the normal bad to completely useless but Im unwilling to sign another contract until VF officially launch here.

    O2 Unlimited =
    • Limited to 3Gb Fair Usage
    • Limited to hanset only use (no unofficial tethering)
    • Limited to a review in March where it could be 1Gb again
    • Limited to a 18mth contract JUST for privilege

sorry to disappoint you but i am using tethered internet for 2 weeks now.:P

Seriously i never understand why people give out about signing a contract to change their plan to something different! Your extending your contract because your handsets are subsidised. Vodafone are selling contracts for a handset they do not even have in their store yet. How can people actually sign up for a contract with no handset?!!! I have used o2 for about 5 years and have had no trouble but then i am more realistic about the limitations of life than others !

Officially supported and authorised/setup by O2? That was the argument!

Ive tethering enabled too (unofficially) but the newer contracts ask you agree not to do it. O2 could charge you for breaking contract if they notice it.

Ive completed my contract and O2 have gotten around €1500 between the phone and handset in that time. Do I have to subsidise a single handset for the rest of my life?

Also why 18mths to change tariffs and not the standard 12mths? You dont even get a handset! Its a rip off!

as long as i'm connecting to the internet and get the same speed i don't care if they know about my tethering method. is just another reason for o2 to charge you extra if you go official.

yes you do get a free handset. i got a free iphone 3gs for the 18 months contract.

With that Free* handset you are committing yourself to a higher spend. They are not doing it just because they like you.

Eitherway I have no problem signing a contract should I require a new handset. I dont think its fair to do so after completing your contract commitments just to change tariff.

Under the new contract terms, if you are using an unofficial tethering, O2 have every right to charge you for it or worse close your account, charge you full amount of contract etc €1000?. Doubt they would ever go to that extreme but they would have the right to pursue you for breaking a legal contract.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 131 ✭✭Limerickgal82

Not Condescending at all!! But people its a phone contract it is not a life or death matter and YES you get a cheaper handset every time u upgrade that is kinda the point of upgrading!! I got a free Palm when i upgraded so it doesnt bother me about the contract. It doesnt matter what phone company you are with u sign a contract to upgrade! You only recontract if changing to a different plan -- by different plan i mean a new plan with new extras! if you changed from clear 175 to clear 350 no contract change but i u want to change to a new advance 350 with unlimited data then yes u change contract date as it is a Brand new plan. Very simple really !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Wow some people here are really missing the point. Nobody has a problem finishing out an 18 month contract which they entered into to get a new phone. The thing that annoys me (and others) is that now O2 want you to sign a new contract commiting you to a another 18 months with O2 and for what? €5 a month less and 2GB a month data that 99% of people using an iphone won't use.

The really clever bit is they get you to sign saying that 3GB is not for tethering...so mihau when you get billed at 2c/kb for all the tethering your doing don't come complaining on here!

the tethering methid that i use fakes the operator in thinking that i use the internet on the phone not on the computer. cheers

It's not really like that though is it? In this case like. The old one doesn't exist anymore. So any decent company that had any respect for their customers, and yes there are many around, would switch you to the "altered" contract without screwing you. They are just a pitiful breed of parasites that's all. They have no concept of goodwill. As I said on another thread, the dregs of the business world.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 131 ✭✭Limerickgal82

You can not go and change someone's plan without their consent its ILLEGAL. Also some people do not want to be on the new plan as they will not use internet! At the end of the day if you do not like ur provider pay the canx contract fee and take ur business elsewhere . Very simple really . Why whinge about something that u have control over. Every Phone company is the same read the fine print :D

There are still several ways that they can find out even if you use a method that fakes the User Agent ID on the browser. Now that they have unlimited* data (3Gb until 31st March!!) I would guess they will start enforcing the new contracts. cheers

That's better! There is a very good reason why people are asked not to use phone speak on forums. It helps in search results. So now you know. Maybe you can pass that useful info on to others in the sector!!

It's attitudes like yours that allow these miserable greedy companies get away with their antics. I'm glad I don't have to depend on leeches like them for a living.

No Need to get personal this a thread about unlimited o2 data.

Great idea if you use it. Stats show people on average use 250 / 300 MB so think about what you would use it for. Tethering will be an obvious next step from o2 or Vodafone. The reason i say Obvious is because there is a move away from Voice / sms to data . If you look at the stats on the telefonica press release for example you will see the jump in data consumption. I suppose the reason they cap it there is a danger that the jump will be so high in data usage that the mast / network grid in Ireland will not be able to cope. If you use Iphone for tethering on your basic 1GB add on the end result will the network will get clogged and people will see a failing on this. This happened in th UK recently! So as i say i have an interest in this SECTOR :D

Q1. If there is a cap why not just say so? Only chancers would make it out to be unlimited when they know that that is not true. Just say 3Gig FFS. How hard is that to say?

Q2. You talk of tethering as if it was something new. It should have been available years ago but the miserable $hits choose not to allow us poor Irish gits to have it. And I'm not being personal. If anyone else spouted the mantra you have burped out I'd say the same.

EDIT: Q3. Perhaps you would like to define "unlimited" for us?

Do you or anyone find it ironic that you go out of your way to defend O2's new contracts and the first thing you say you will do is break it! :D

At least I will complain or give feedback about something before I sign a legally binding contract.

at the risk of enduring a verbal attack such as that you launched on LimerickGal i just want to point out that the data is unlimited, the 3gbs is a fair usage policy which is going to be reviewed in March at the end of the promotion.
you really should read any contracts before you sign/slander them. :o

    Unlimited \Un*lim"it*ed\, adjective

    1. Not limited; having no bounds; boundless; as, an unlimited expanse of ocean.

    2. Undefined; indefinite; not bounded by proper exceptions; as, unlimited terms. ''Nothing doth more prevail than unlimited generalities.'' --Hooker.

    3. Unconfined; not restrained; unrestricted.

3GB seems like a limit to me, be it "Fair Usage policy" or not.

Unlimited is not 3Gig, 6Gig or a zillion Gig in any language. It's false advertising. As I've said if it's 3 gig then say so. Why the slight of hand unless they hope to fool people?

Totally agree with this, unlimited should mean unlimited. Or else give it a different name!

Sorry for bumping but when it says that the 3GBs is a promo until a review in March could that mean that the people who get the 3gig deal would have it reduced to 1GB or that newbies getting it in March would only get a GB?
