Pedal Question

I've just bought a set of Crank Bros Smarty pedals for a Spinning bike I use over the winter but when I tried to fit them the threaded shaft seem slightly bigger than on the pedals I removed from the bike. Now the pedals I took off seemed to be standard boggo black resin jobs with clips on them.
I thought pedals would be standard, at least they have been for the last "cough;)" years I've been cycling, so could someone help by telling me if there are different sizes or is the spinning bike just an odd thing?

Most standard bike pedals are 9/16 inch. There is a slightly smaller 1/2 inch size thats not very common but sounds like thats what you may have.

Ok. Sound like this could be the case, are these 1/2 pedals widely available?

I'd ideally like to use these pedals, but I dont want to go down the road of changing the crank and especially the bottom bracket incase thats a different size aswell.

AIUI, BMX pedals use the different size shaft.

So does any one know is it possible to get clipless pedals in this size?

It might be possible, but difficult enough. BMX pedals only use 1/2" spindles where the crank is one-piece (the majority of low-end BMXes). Where the crank is two or three-piece, the spindle size is usually 9/16".

Clipless pedals have been in use in BMX for the last 8 -10 years, but generally at the higher end - where you also find 2/3 piece cranks, and so 9/16" pedal shafts.

It might be a cheaper option to upgrade the cranks on the bike.

I doubt it. You can get adaptors but they look like they will increase the Q-factor (e.g. they will push the pedals outwards.) They also have these ones, the former install by pedal wrench, these by allen key, not sure if there is any other difference (e.g. in length.)

Nice piece of kit those adaptors but a wee bit pricy.

I think the only way is to change the cranks, I'd say I pick up something fairly cheap.

    Thanks for the help guys.
