    It says it right there.

    "Law 10 - Referee Abuse"

Eh, yeah, got that much thanks. I haven't seen sanctions like that for ref abuse before, so again, I wonder what happened specifically in this case? Law 10 usually ends up with just a player ban for a few weeks.

What? Theres about 20-30 different laws under law 10 which can range from anything from 2 weeks to life. Dupuy just got 24 weeks under law 10. There have been many sanctions like this for referee abuse already over the last number of years but they are not publicized as much. Did a player not get a 2 year ban a couple of years ago in Leinster? This is a new scheme under the Leinster branch to clamp down on referee abuse etc..

Ok, I'll try one last time, then I'll give up, maybe I didn't make my point or ask my question properly, maybe some people are just in the mood for being pedantic .

I wonder what happened SPECIFICALLY in THIS PARTICULAR CASE, since MOST punishments in the amateur game in the Leinster branch result in bans of maybe 8 to 18 weeks for the player involved only.

    but, in this specific case,
Club Member banned from all rugby activity in club for current Season 09-10 and further banned from Pitch Side Activity during matches until 4th January 2011

Club fined 10 International 6 Nations Home Stand Tickets per match for season 2010/11

Player suspended for 8 playing months until 4th October 2010

Home Advantage lost in first 3 scheduled Home Leinster League games for next season

Fine of €5000 to the Club (€1000 to be paid before 30/04/2010 and €4000 payment suspended on condition that the club does not come before any disciplinary/citing committee prior to 04/10/2012. In the event the club does not come before any disciplinary/citing committee prior to 04/10/12, the suspended portion of the fine (€4000) is cancelled).

Direct payment of €1000 to the IRFU Charitable Trust, as offered by club

As a player I hate a ref getting abuse, particularly from the sidelines, but how far did the people in question go, it seems like a very substantial punishment, particularly where elements of the punishment have a big effect on the club as a whole.

there was a directive issued to all the leinster branch teams about this, saying that any club found to be guilty of referee abuse would lose international tickets. It may not have been a very serious incident, but enough to warrant punishment nonetheless.
