Does anyone know if I upgrade a retail version of Vista to this, will it be bound to my PC like an OEM version or can I transfer to another PC in the future?

Retail means you can transfer from one computer to another.

Upgrade means you can't transfer it if the upgraded version of window was OEM

you can only transfer an upgrade if the upgraded version was also transferable

also the original windows license is killed by the upgrade so you can't reuse the version that was upgraded again

the clue is in the word upgrade

15 years ago you couldn't do a clean install from the NT4 upgrade CD either, so no change there,

Maybe you missed this in your rush to exonerate M$ ;):

Please Note: changes to Irish release of Microsoft Windows 7
Software4Students ask all our customers to please note that Microsoft have recently made a number of changes to the European release of Microsoft Windows 7. Please be aware that while this is subject to change, the latest information that we have is as follows:

This version of Windows 7 ships as an upgrade edition. It is NOT possible or permitted to perform a clean install with this product. You must have an existing valid Windows operating system on your hard disk. All editions of Windows 7 will now include the Internet Explorer 8 web browser as standard.

    Besides an update is just:
    $ sudo apt-get update * :D

You certainly can do a clean install in the sense that no trace of your prior system will be left, but whilst doing that it must find a prior xp or vista installation. So don't for instance format your OS drive; leave xp, vista, Win7 Starter etc on it but perform a full installation. If starting with a fresh HDD you put on xp then immediately upgrade to 7 with this, overwriting xp.

This is the only way to upgrade from xp to 7 or from 32 to 64 bit btw.

Is this a student only license or can anyone use it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,864 ✭✭✭MunsterCycling

It strange coz even M$ don't recommend you do an upgrade install, at the launch they were pushing for you to do clean installs to avoid issues.

I bought win 7 through the MS college student discount for 29 sterling that ran up until christmas. We got a new comp that had no OS on it and i was able to do a full install 64bit onto the computer without any problems.

    It's in no way crippled.

As far as I know the disc you get contains all the versions of Windows 7 on it and you can do a clean install from it. They key you buy will only work on the version you're paying for.. There's guides online as to how to unlock the other versions, not that its any use but it'll show you that you're getting the full version...

Will this upgrade work for oem versions of windows ?

    Where is the problem Oracle?

In the case of XP or a 'downgrade' from a 'higher' vista version it is a full clean install, you just need the active windows operating system (which will be wiped). AFAIK for Vista users there is the option of a clean install too.

(Got my disk as well :))

What do you mean by that? Is the product linked to not recommended by Microsoft?

Anyway, I have XP and Ubuntu on dual boot on my laptop... would there be any problems using this CD to upgrade XP to Windows 7 without affecting Ubuntu and the files on that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,864 ✭✭✭MunsterCycling

Win 7 will wipe out the GRUB install for ubuntu and to get it working you would have to reinstall grub after upgrade.

The launch I was talking about was the Win 7 tech lunch, none of the presentation team would reccommend an upgrade install due to legacy issues is all they said.

There's no problem if you do a clean install, it's upgrading a running operating system, so called "in place upgrades" that cause problems. As MunsterCycling has said, (and most IT people have always known) although approved by Microsoft, they're not recommended. In many cases in place upgrades will trash your system.

Lads ,sorry to ask again ,but I can't find any info on problems upgrading from an oem version of vista.

I read in a post somewhere on boards before that you can't do this ,but I don't see it anywhere now ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,864 ✭✭✭MunsterCycling

Don't know of any direct problems per-se other than the obvious do a fresh install.

Good info about this UPGRADE of the win7 version is found here

In your particular case, the upgrade version will work on the computer that came with the OEM version of Vista (or where the OEM version was installed first). The win7 upgrade then automatically becomes OEM as well.

I got the 64bit Win 7 pro upgrade disc off this exact site a few weeks ago, and it works fine. I was able to do a clean install of win 7 on my dell laptop which had Vista HP 32 bit on it.

Check if your college is on that if you're a student. I think it's only for IT departments though.

I got a full copy of win 7 pro for nothing.

Ah good stuff I forgot I was registered on that. I might give it a go then, was just considering avoiding the hassle of having to re-install Ubuntu and everything but it might be worth it.
