    Yes as far as Im aware you can receive viruses while popping to your usual safe sites as Im told there are viruses that just scan IP ranges and latch onto to anything unprotected...

    One way that comes to mind is an advert containing flash with malware. Many "reputable" sites have advertising of one sort of another. Sometimes they don't have control over the advertising content - it is fed into the page by an internet ad agency based on the client's IP number, and/or content of the page they are looking at.

    Malware developers have been known to buy flash advertising capacity to deliver malware - especially if they are involved in scams with rich pickings - eg credit card fraud, online banking fraud and similar.
