Senegal's president says he will offer free land and "repatriation" to people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
President Abdoulaye Wade said Haitians were sons and daughters of Africa since Haiti was founded by slaves, including some thought to be from Senegal.
"The president is offering voluntary repatriation to any Haitian that wants to return to their origin," said Mr Wade's spokesman, Mamadou Bemba Ndiaye.

Relativly speaking Senegal is wealthy, and has good land for agriculture - those that can actually get there (who's paying the fare?) will arrive to nothing though, they'll have to start from scratch.

Well, that is a generous offer, but I think people from Haiti will have a great deal of difficulty even leaving the country.

Yet another comedy* filled Haiti thread

Personally I think the Mods should put an embargo on the subject. There is nothing funny about any part of the situation.

If all of their descendants came back, we'd all have to sleep standing up.

As soon as the Irish get wind of this we'll be out to out do the Senegalese.
I reckon we will adopt Haiti. Beat that Senegal.....

Fair play President Abdoulaye Wade, nice to see such a wide encompassing gesture to your fellow man in the aftermath of such a tragedy.

I doubt it as well, the US has a dreadful record when it comes to taking in the poor and the huddled masses.

This move may at this time seem nice and honest and genuine, but what happens when the Senegalese want the land back?

They seem to forget that, if it weren't for the poor and huddled masses emigrating their in the first place, there wouldn't be a United States.

The president will use his spaceship to send them all to Planet Marklar.

Or to put it another way, the marklar will use his marklar to send them all to marklar marklar.

Yeh but then there'll be marklar coming to change their marklar, and with more marklar, the marklar will have more and more marklar and it'll take another marklar or whatever marklar affects marklar and we're back at square marklar.

AFAIR, Senegal has a fairly low population density, so they probably could give them land somewhere and not expect it back, especially if the Haitians (sp?) assimilated well.

Well, that IMO is a big IF. No person should have the right or authority to "give away" land.

If history has taught us anything, it is that Land&Religion are the two most
    damning causes of international conflict.

There would, but it would probably be dominated by Germans, French & Italians and of course the British and Spanish, plus just about every other European migerant.
