Buying a used VW: 2006 Golf vs 2005 Polo

    Hi,

Planning to buy a second hand car soon, budget about 8-10k. Been driving a 1996 Polo for ages so thinking about sticking with VW because I valued its reliability. I want to stick with a smallish hatchback.

I like the look of the new Golf but am a bit put off by a friend who said they're nowhere near as reliable as my old Polo.

Any opinions? Here are two cars I have in mind for about the same price:-

    2006 Golf, 74k: http://www.windsor.ie/used_cars_details.aspx?cid=75734#2
    2005 Polo, 52k: http://www.windsor.ie/used_cars_details.aspx?cid=75715#1

    thanks

I take it you're just looking at two cars from one dealer? My opinion is they're both poor value, the Polo in particular is an insane price. You should broaden your searches by having a look on carzone.ie and not just focusing on two cars that a particular dealer has in stock.

VW reliability is also a thing of the past by the way, you should buy something else if that's your main requirement. If you're completely stuck on the idea of another Polo, I'd recommend a Skoda Fabia as an alternative. It has the same engine, same chassis and is likely to be far better value.

Anything else you need to know feel free to ask.

You do know that you could get a brand new 2010 small car for similar money that is being asked for those cars under the scrapage scheme?

€10K for a 5 year old bog standard Polo is lunacy. And VWs are nowhere near as reliable as they used to be, the 1.4 engine in the Golf in particular is rubbish and should be avoided.
