Speaking from personal experience I'll have to agree with the other lads, its a little young to start a child in Martial Arts.

There's nothing dangerous about it, but their attention span at that age is pretty limited. However you might find someone to take your money if you look around, but I see little advantage in starting that age tbh.

I disagree. I train them as young as 4, I have three of that age in my kids class right now. The problem is not their attention span, it's that most classes are dull to them as people don't know how to teach children of that age and become frustrated when they won't line up or put effort into punching the air and yelling.

Kids, young boys especially, need to wrestle early. I would argue that it is vital for a young boy to be involved in a strong male activity from an early age. If I were a Dad of a 4 year old boy, and I am, I would have him grappling with other young boys, and I do. It's perfect for them. They learn a contact sport without getting punched or kicked, they learn to become agile and quick, they learn to use their strength, they have fun, they learn to stand up and shake hands no matter what. If the coaching is right, they have great fun.

So Judo, BJJ, wrestling or similar would be my reccomendation.

A rule of thumb I read somewhere was if they've started school they'll probably be able for a martial arts class. you'll know soon enough if you take him down and if he takes to it or not.

i have a 4 year old who is driving me crazy with climbing and wanting to tackle his 18 mth brother. i think some sort of martial arts training would interest him and i think he would try it.

There are lead in clubs like Little Ninjas that are for under 7. Its games with a martial arts focus done by martial arts experts. Its a great feed in for a child that is too young. There is probably something similar in your area. There has been kids that have achieved black belt by 9-10 years old by first being in this setup.

sounds cool! now i have to find a class in leinster. I'm in newbridge, but can travel in either direction within reason (1/2 hr).

i spent some time in Japan teaching english, and it would be great to get me son involved in something that originated there! Maybe i should try it to!

please feel free to PM me if anyone knows of classes. thanks!

There certainly were judo clubs for kids in celbridge and maynooth, not sure if they still exist. Sorry I don't have a phone number for either club, maybe someone here does.

Best piece of advice i've seen on this forum, and IMO Gymnastics would compliment the above martial arts to improve the ABC's and RJT's..

    Hi Roper

I was really interested in your post about martial arts for 4 year olds boys and the approach you have to teaching them. I have a 4 year old boy who struggles with his anger at times and I would really like an outlet for this but one which teaches him about respect and control. Do you have a class for that age group - if so, when/where etc? Or is there anybody who you think is good for that age group anywhere my direction - we live in Dun Laoghaire.

    Thanks so much
