Snakes on Bull Island and overtightened valves

Took a spin out to Howth yesterday. Hadn't read the "Epic Bickering" thread so couldn't understand why so many roadies going the other way, not to mention some madman hammering along on an MTB.

Anyway, got a snakebite crossing the Bull Island causeway from the most innocent looking of kerbs (should have bunnyhopped it but it just didn't seem necessary).

Whipped out my spare tube, put it on, but then found the valve nut was so tight I couldn't open it with my fingers. Wasted 5 minutes screaming at it before resorting to my puncture repair kit. Took a lot of effort with a pliers today to open the valve.

    Anyone else had this misfortune?

yeah a few weeks ago I was loosening the valve for pumping the tyre, and the whole top of the valve screwed off
Decided to screw it back and hope for the best and went out on a ride
needless to say I was changing the tube after a while by the side of the road

    lose..

Happened to me last week (only the third puncture in over 2 years, which I think was partly due to running a slightly lower pressure in icy conditions, and partly the crap that has accumulated on the roads during ths cold spell)

It was quite cold, and I also ended up unscrewing the whole of the top of the valve. I persisted and eventually loosened the nut - I did have another spare and would have resorted to this if necessary

You've reminded me to check the spares to make sure none of them are too tight!

    Quite common.

    I hate Presta!

I have a Mini Leatherman in my toolkit, so I always have pliers with me. I had to use them once to get a valve nut off.

(I don't travel light the way many others here do.)
