How much would you need to invest to get started in say gold, silver, sugar or wheat ?

Here are some links to get you started on your research:

    ICE Exchange.

    The CME

    A clearing exchange: LCHClearnet

You'll need to have cash on reserve to meet margin requirements as this would be settled at the close of every day in terms i.e. If you have a loss, it's taken out of your acccount.

Anyway, have a look at the margin requirements etc, they vary for different products. Also, what a clearing house requires you to have on reserve.
