Dying tooth

I had a really large filling a few months ago on a molar, it was very sensitive even 2 months later when it seemed the nerve finally settled down. Recently I've had throbbing pain and I noticed the tooth has started to darken. So I think the tooth is now dying & the the filling didn't take so I'll probably need a root canal & crown. Anyway, curosity killed the cat and, I was wondering what the life span to a tooth that is already noticably darkened until it gets fitted with a crown. Will it break or fracture easy straight away or how long will that take?
