I am having a similar problem. I am thinking of just wiping the whole thing and restoring to factory settings. I just have a few bits of software I need to transfer to my external hard drive first which I am not too sure about. It can be very liberating to wipe your computer, you get rid of all the crap you have gathered up over the past year.

run 'msconfig' and remove all startup items

    or

    create new user account

    or

    do what c_montgomery said

    or

dump avast and set up comodo security

    and

dump firefox and use Google Chrome :)

backup / save anything you want to keep then reinstall windows.
if you decide to run msconfig be careful when removing startup items - you need some of them

...'need' is a pretty harsh word there,

Ok, some power management apps at startup are required for battery and cpu management but for testing purposes I always start here and if it makes a difference identify what items are hogging resources.

    ...personal preference mainly,

    and performance.

    Firefox (IMO) is over-rated.

...anyway, time spent on trouble-shooting and fault finding any system is time waisted, get all of your data on CD or external drive and re-install.

Like everything else in life there are pro's and con's though, while adopting the method of keeping all irreplaceable data off-board and wiping the system at the first sight of trouble is best practice the problem is nothing has been learned.

If curiosity has you wondering what is going on why not try your hand at fixing it? what is there to loose? (taking that you are set up to do a fresh install of the OS incase all goes wrong).

...with performance and efficiency being the main goal take this tool and start digging :)

One of the entries suggests an adware downloader trojan.

OP head over to the Virus and Malware Removal forum. Read the "I think I have a virus" - Please Read & Try BEFORE Posting (Updated 04/06/09), follow as many of the instructions as you can and then start a new thread. ASJ should be able to help you out.

    baby, bathwater TBH.

Wow, someone has far too much time on their hands if they reinstall at the first sign of trouble.

    run the usual antimalware scans

run a system restore if it only recently has become slow

vista and 7 will use 80% of ram to speed things up,
think about it XP ignores memory unless you tell not to aggressively swap stuff to disk

if nothing has been learned then wiping is a waste of time, as the problem will re-occur

also worth a try to setup a new user account in case the profile is borked

moving to malware forum , OP please read the stickies there for more info.
