I've been asked to operate ableton live and do backing vocals in a band for some live gigs. The person who asked me has been looking into getting a MOTU 896 for the job. The idea is to send the tracks via firewire to the motu from ableton. The 4 stereo tracks coming from ableton will be split into 8 (left and right) tracks and then fed into the sound desk.

The 896 was recommended by her friend. Her question is, is this overkill? Would a profire 610 or a MOTU ultralight (maybe used with a DI box) do the same job? Or is she better off to invest in an 896 as they do seem to be a really nice piece of kit? She has the chance of getting one of these second hand. What do ye think?

    Cheers for the advice.

Christopher Willits uses Ableton and a MOTU Traveler, seems to work fine for him. I don't know how the 896 measures up against the Traveler, but the Traveler seems to work fine for him.
