I'm off to Rome at end of March for 3 nights. We would like to have a nice hotel (which won't break the bank) in central Rome. Any recommendations or advice most welcome.

    :)

I'm going to Rome in mid-March and booked this place http://www.hotelartemide.it/

It has free minibar and appears to be quite central. It's no. 10 of all hotels in Rome on tripadvisor. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d205044-Reviews-Artemide_Hotel-Rome_Lazio.html I would advise you to use this website when you're looking at hotels.

Stayed in Hotel Raffaello couple of months back while stopping off in Rome for a night, it's a small hotel and situated a short distance from Trivoli Fountain and in the heart of Rome, also a absolutely beautiful cathedral yards away from the hotel.

You can also visit their sister hotel nearby and avail of the top-floor decked bar which supposedly has tremendous views of the city at night.

The staff are splendid and extremely helpful and speak fluent english.

    Breakfast is also decent.

    Will recommend for you.

Within 5 minutes walk of Termini, the main train station. Close to 2 Metro stations. 20 minutes walk to Colloseum, Forum, Fontana Tritone. 30 minutes from Trevi, Navona.

Stayed twice. First time the room was adequate, second time the room was palatial. The staff speak English and are very helpful. Budget €100 - 120 for a double booked through one of the bulk room sites.

Ive actually stayed in this hotel and I really couldn't fault it. The rooms are small as you'd expect in Rome but they are top notch. You have everything you require in the room plus more. The free mini bar and tea and coffee facilities are very good. The hotel staff are excellent, breakfast was excellent and the location was excellent. You can't go wrong with this hotel!

    Hi,
I'm also in the process of finding a hotel in Rome at the moment. However a few friends of mine that have been there advised me not to book a hotel anywhere Termini Station as it was a rough area of the city and a lot of homeless people on the streets as well as prostitutes?I'm just wondering is there is any truth in this....as a lot of the hotels recommended here look lovely but are in that area...thanks

probably the more west you go of termini the better but I honestly didn't see much trouble late at night and we walked most places at night. I stayed near enough to Termini on via nazionale and saw no problems

Termini is a train station. Show me one anywhere that doesn't have homeless people hanging around...... I saw two prostitutes one night near Maria Maggiore, but they didn't try to force me to buy anything ;)

I have stayed in that area about half a dozen times without incident, or seeing anything unruly. Rome is a city like any other, and has it's muppets like any other. Behave as you would in Dublin centre, or London, or any city, and it is safe.

Google's Streetview gives you a good idea what the area looks like.

We stayed in the Domus Praetoria Hotel near Termini. http://www.domushotel.com/domus_eng.html We thought it was really nice, very clean and it has surprisingly large rooms which is unusual in Rome! Very reasonable priced, we booked through www.booking.com

Obviously train stations tend to attract homeless people for some reason and Termini is no different. I never felt unsafe though. This particular hotel is on a lovely street and there is a Carabinieri station two doors down the street from the hotel which adds to the feeling of security in the area!

    It's rated #22 on Trip Advisor http://www.tripadvisor.ie/Hotel_Review-g187791-d518658-Reviews-Hotel_Domus_Praetoria-Rome_Lazio.html

Have a great time in Rome. One piece of advice I would give you is to prebook as much as you can before you go, Scavi, Collesium, Vatican, Villa Borghese. It saves spending time in unbelievably long queues.

This is 10 mins walk from the train station on Via Nazionale. Stayed there in '07 and am going back next month. Nice handy spot to all the sights, clean and reasonably priced.

stayed in http://www.astridhotelrome.it for the Ireland Italy rugby match in 2007. Located 5 -10 minutes on tram from the Popolo. In a nice quiet location, easy to get to and from. Ideal for lie-in's, as there wasn't much traffic noise from outside.
Our room had a nice balcony, ideal for an evening rest before hitting the night time sights.

    Hi ADDON

This is the sight we used to prebook our Colluseum ticket, I think it does several others also. http://www.pierreci.it/en/buy-the-ticket/booking-tickets.aspx When you are collecting your tickets make sure you get in the collection queue (the shorter one) don't stand in the really really, really long one!!! We then opted to go with a tour group outside as we wanted to understand the sight a bit rather than just wandering aimlessly and looking at the ruins. The tour was €10 extra and included a tour of the Palatine Hill later in the day. I have a flier from them, they are called Roman Holidays Cell Phone 347 779 1856 and email info@romanholidayseventi.com. There are literally 100s of tour guides outside the Colluseum offering similar though. Some will also offer to get you tickets and avoid the queue if you arrive with none.

For the Vatican we didn't book ahead but joined a tour instead. We skipped the queue with the tour guide, I would highly recommend him, his name was Andreas and he can be booked through http://www.7hillstours.it/ Our tour was nearly 4 hours and was amazing. If you don't go with a tour I think you miss some of the paintings/artwork etc as you tend to wander aimlessly after a while! I think he charged an extra €25 per person on top of admission which I thought was steep at the time but when I seen the queue I was glad. At the end of the tour I was more than happy, and I felt it was value for money. The Vatican also do their own tours on their own website. http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/MV_Home.html

For Villa Borghese you can only visit with a prebooked ticket. http://www.galleriaborghese.it/borghese/en/einfo.htm

The Scavi Tour is a tour of the excavations under St Peters Basilica. For more information read http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/institutions_connected/uffscavi/documents/rc_ic_uffscavi_doc_gen-information_20040112_en.html You need to send an email a few weeks in advance. We didn't see this as I left it too late but I wish I’d been able to! :(

    I hope this helps.:)

Feel free to PM me if you want me to answer any other questions more indepth!

What did you get in the mini bar and was it worth it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 70 ✭✭offalyman

If i remember correctly you get a couple of cans of beer, still and sparking water, few soft drinks like coke and fanta, a couple of cartons of fruit juice, can't remember was there a quart of wine. There was also some chocolate, peanuts and a couple of types of biscuits. All restocked each day. There was also tea and coffee making facilities.

Another plus point was the breakfast was top notch. I over heard a couple beside us one morning at breakfast who one of was celiac. She said that she never came a cross a hotel before with a range of foods to suit here diet.

when they restocked the the bar again, did you have to pay for it the second time?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 70 ✭✭offalyman

No. It was free all the time.

Artemide looks amazing but it's a bit expensive for me. Does anyone else have any suggestions? Going over with my girlfriend in April and am searching for a hotel now so any more suggestions would be welcome.

What type of hotel are you looking for?

I was there last year and we stayed in Hotel Zara. It was very basic, no bar or restaurant but had breakfast included. It was very central, could walk to most places, about 10 minutes from the Trevi fountain. It was 10 minutes walk from the termini train station and closer to a Metro station. meant when we had to go to teh vatican, walked to the Metro, got a train and tooj about 15-20 minutes in total

    http://www.hotelzara.com/

want to know anymore, post here or PM me

Decided to go for the Eurostars International Palace (http://www.eurostarshotels.com/EN/hotel-eurostars-international-palace.html?dia_ini=16&mes_ini=03&any_ini=2010&noches=1). Someone in work stayed there and recommended it. It's on the Via Nazionale so is centrally located. Reasonably priced too. Can't wait :)

Just back from great 3 night break in Rome. Stayed in River Palace Hotel (near Piazza de Popollo). Lovely hotel, comfortable rooms ( a bit small but luxury anyway). We were offered an upgrade to larger room for €20 which we declined (what's the point, I think).

Great "happy hour" deal in the bar every evening; half price on drinks and sandwiches from 6pm to 10 pm.

Breakfast was really good. I expected a small continental breakfast, but this was as good as any Irish hotel. Lots of cereals, fruit, breads, cakes and then on to the eggs, tomatoes, rashers and sausages. I'd definetly return to this one!!!

    :D

Got back from Rome a week ago. I'd recommend Eurostars International Palace to everyone.

Great location - 10-15 minute walk to all major sites, 30 mins or so to Vatican
Lovely room - Very modern and comfortable. Not massive but on par with most Roman hotels I think
Price - Got it at a decent rate on ebookers.com, lot cheaper than the website was advertising
Staff - Pleasant and helpdful. No complaints and allowed us to leave our luggage there after check-out on our last day (flight was not until 10pm)

One thing I advise is to ensure that your air conditioning is working. Our wasn't working very well but it wasn't too hot apart from one day. I'm sure they would have moved us to another room but we didn't ask them as it was too much effort (lazy I know).

    Great hotel and gorgeous city.
