Hi ive downlaoded some films and cannot get them to play on the ps3. Ive put them on a usb key and transferred them onto the playstation but they wont play. Does anyone know how to fix this? I know you can stream them of some site but I dont want to do that. Do I have to format the avi file someway?

Not usually. One of the big selling points was that the PS3 played DivX files.

I use a file converter anyway, only so that the file compresses so I can store more

Is it an mkv file? If the end of the filename is .divx try just changing it to .avi, if it's .mkv you need to transcode it to .avi.

I think Divx has to be enabled.

Youhave to register using the code on your ps3 on the divx website then they give you a file to play on your ps3 which activates it IIRC from when I did it.

Nah, get the code of your ps3 and check out the website (divx).

Its a code you get from one of the menus by the way.

He means go to the system settings on the ps3, there should be a divx setting there under "video" I think....

Under system settings, there is an option "DivX VOD Registration Code".
Bring that to the website (they have a section for ps3s).

The rest of it is fairly self-explanatory.

I use that, in converts on the fly while your watching. You'll need at least a decent dual core to do so.

    +1

Ideally try and get the movies playing directly , but this piece of freeware is really cool , especially converting as it streams to your PS3 .
No more long conversions and very little loss of quality whilst streaming.

I see you mentioned that you don't want to " stream th from some site" .
PS3mediaserver is not a site , it's a piece of software you download to your p.c that your PS3 will see over your wifi network.
It then allows you to browse your p.c files on your PS3.
Simply select the movie you want and the ps3mediaserver converts the same said movie whilst steaming .

Takes a whole 5mins to get going and works straight out of the box !
    M.

Is it possible to play HD divx on PS3, I downloaded one recently and it says file type not supported, normally dont have a problem playing Divx's... or does the PS3 only play certain types of HD files...?

It won't play MKV files. These need to be converted (quick procedure) using a program like MKV2VOB or some such.

Such a program will convert the MKV container to one the PS3 will recognise, like m2ts, mp4, vob, mpg, etc.

Or use streaming software on PC like TVersity that converts on the fly.

I had the same problem last night. I've been playing divx files on the PS3 for ages, both streaming from my Mac and also direct from a USB stick. Last night I tried to stream a HD divx file and it wouldn't play. Put it on a stick and it still wouldn't play. Will have another look tonight to see if there is a work around.

Can anyone confirm that Hd files will play on the PS3 without issue?

Yep. I've played 720 and 1080 files without any problems.

I have played a 720p movie (over 4GB!) without issue as well.

I simply transferred it from mkv container to a avi container.

What is the file extension of the divx file you are trying to play adox?

    Hi noodler,

    The extension is .divx.

Hmm, maybe try and converting them to a different container.

Google seems to say some div x work and some don't, maybe get a program that will convert them to .avi?

EDIT: Actually maybe this link will help, they suggest a converter

Don't bother converting, just change the extension to .avi
Always works for me on the XBox at least.

Ok converted the file with Dr Divx and it plays fine. The only problem is the file is now half the size and a much lower resolution.:pac:

I am sure that just an option you can change before you start the conversion. Try a different file type if there is no option for a quality/size trade-off. There really should be.
