I seen Up in the Air last night via illegal download and thought it was hugely enjoyable.
But I coudlnt help but get flashbacks to The Terminal and Jerry Maguire.
    Anyone else feel the same?

LOL. Funny that cos I thought it was a cross between Die Hard 2 and Sleepless in Seattle.

Very average film. Seemed like a very expensive American Airlines commerical.

I can never understand people feeling the need to boast about downloads

I'm mystified by the popularity of the film. Nothing happens and then it's over.
Maybe I got the wrong file screen at the cinema.

Must admit am a HUGE Clooney fan (Plan to marry him at some stage!;)) but I was totally disappointed with Up in the Air. Went to see it last week, and just thought it lacked something, but couldnt quite figure out exactly what! Some parts were quite funny, but generally thought it wasnt great, couldnt really understand all the Oscar hype associated with it!

I too believe this is hugely overrated. Can't see what the fuss is about.

The acting was very good but the story lacked substance.

Not even, it's a stunt double!

Well, the stunt double does! Although, she looks great in a dress, all the same.

Saw this tonight and don't think I can ad much to it.
Good performances, but an average movie overall.

I felt that the sisters wedding and fiancees cold feet part was abit tacked on and kinda out of place.
Like the movie was coming short so they threw some other gear in it.

    Jason Bateman was brilliant.

I'm not a regular cinema goer, so was very excited to see this! I was really disappointed. It started, seemed funny and okay and then just ended! They could have explored the story of Ryan and Alex's relationship a bit more. It was all very blah!

This is in essence what the story was, Ryan's life lacked substance. But story coudln't lack any substance since it was done in a mature believable way.

Did you leave the film near the end? Wasn't that the whole unromantic point that in the end you can see that they didn't really have a relationship? That Ryan was in turn 'played' just as he thought he had turned a corner and found someone.

I thought it was portrayed perfectly with Clooney's character arc, although the Sister's fiancee have last minute jitters was a bit of a cop out to move him along.

Thought it was quite an interesting movie, and liked the fact that there was no happy ending. Made a nice change.

similar to others, saw it when it was released a few weeks back. Had been reading about all the oscar hype and had high expectations. Came out of the film thinking thinking i had missed something in the film, but on reflection i think that it was the film itself that was lacking. just couldn't grab me, well acted though.

Caught this last night & generally enjoyed it, if only because it seemed to save itself from what I thought was going to be the moralistic "Small Town America is best" conclusion.
I was happily taking in the film & its quirks and then suddenly,
in the section set during the sister's wedding, I thought the movie was hurtling towards some kind of "awakening" moment where our lead character would settle down in snowy small town America with his newly discovered lover.
I admittedly found the politics & machinations of the firings a little odd; I suppose there is a bit of disconnect as the film's HR environment doesn't really exist in Ireland - thank God. I presume the "termination engineers" and all that waffle struck a chord with the average American white-collar worker, hence some of the hype that built up across the Atlantic.

Oh and something that grinds my gears - and don't want the OP to take too much offence - is people's insistence on trying to describe a movie by calling it some kind of synthesis between two other films (who are often utterly different in tone); "it's like Schindler's List meets Weekend at Bernies!", "it's like Star Wars meets Kramer vs. Kramer!" ;)

    Harsh! :)

I enjoyed it. Some of it was a bit weak but all in all it was good. Thought the whole point was that it lacked substance.
