Team Sky medical team?

I have read that Team Sky have no less than three doctors on their books for the upcomming season. Why do they need a ratio of 9 riders to 1 doctor? Assuming that each doctor does a standard 40 hour week each rider will recieve 4 hours of medical atention a week. I understand that top class endurance athletes are always on the edge of illness but this seems excessive. Does anyone know anything about the medical support teams for other pro tour teams?

Do they specialize in different areas? Does it give more details on what each doctor's role is on the website?

I have no idea what the standard is for a pro team, maybe sky just have so much cash they walked into the store and ordered too much of everything.

Also teams can be at more than one race at the same time.

Doctors also need training... and holidays ... and can even (God forbid) be ill

I would have thought this is what you might expect from a new, highly ambitious and very professional team.

I also am not sure if they are all full-time with Sky - some of the Sky personnel also have team GB responsibilities, and they may have other responsibilities outside cycling

Thats fairly standard for a Pro-Tour team.
Not all the Doctors are full time (one of them Roger Palfreeman is also the British Cycling Doc), the other 2 have other committements as well. Trust me it's not a good idea to depend on a cycling team for your only source of income !
The Columbia HTC team had 3 lead Doctor and were attached to a hosptial who provided another 3-4 as needed.
As El Tonto pointed out there are often 3 teams at 3 different races at the same time and they usually have a doctor with them.
