The wrath of God has been sent to test us even further. As if our roads werent crap enough before the snow, now their full of potholes. Down here in the sunny south east (ye right)their deep enough to get lost in. God help anyone who lands in one. Dont fancy dropping me new Ksyrium SLs into on of em. I presume its the same around the capital or have the council been out repairing the roads for all you Dublin boys.

Plenty of new potholes in North County Dublin, and some of the old ones are looking increasingly like craters! Went over a couple the other night - luckily I have strong wheels, and also managed to avoid a blow-out. The ice has played havoc with our local roads.

The local concil are far too busy trying to find and fix water leaks rather than dealing with "normal" road maintenance. I suspect it will be some time before they turn their attention to potholes, particularly in the current economic climate. Certainly around us, it has been a matter of emergency repairs only (ie dealing with those that cause a danger to motor vehicles) for some time now

I think I've been lucky so far, only the old potholes to deal with, though they are now slightly bigger.

All the grit/crap at the side of the road and on the cycle paths is my new hazard.

My part of Dublin is riddled with potholes, no sign of repairs or even an attempt to mark them. A mate of mine caused 1000 quid damage to his car in one. They'll have to do something before the claims start rolling in.

I think they are only liable if they repair them.

A country wide problem I'd imagine. About to head out to slalom around the Kerry pot holes. The council have sent a truck around to throw a bit of tarmac into the holes but a day later the hole is open again. In the "current economic climate" it's hard to imagine much else will be done.

Yes, I think that's true. Someone had a post about it here recently.

They are responsible if they repair the road carelessly/negligently. However they are not responsible for normal "wear and tear", which covers most potholes (there was a case about this).

However if the road is dangerous, and the responsible authority knows its dangerous (because they have inspected it, or have, perhaps repeatedly, been advised of the danger) I think they would still have a resposibilty. Basically they would be negligent if they did not either place a warning notice, or repair the road, or close-off the problem area or the whole road.

Bottom line is they probably cannot be forced to repair the road, but should take reasonable steps to avoid members of the public being put at danger

They have been doing that in North County Dublin, or maybe it is just locals doing it. Problem is instead of tarmac, they are using sand. Had a few close calls last night when the wheel sunk into some of these.
Although I do suppose it is better than some of the craters out that way. Some very deep and width ones that'd cause problems in even the biggest of 4x4s on the road.

Yeah Muckers , you're right ....went on my usual cycle skirting the Comeraghs this morning , could not believe how badly the roads had cut up . The road into Clonea-Power from the Lemybrien direction is totally mashed . Got a puncture on my front wheel an' all but to be honest after such a long spell off the bike Ididn't give a f*** ! Couldn't get the smile off my face for thje duration of my spin .:D

out today for my first spin of 010, the main road from enniscorthy to wexford was raveling ,with some holes .
the B roads are just dangerous to drive on around hear ,patching will not do as there is not enough to patch.

Yeah, I went for a drive yesterday to Hook Head (from New Ross) and the roads were atrocious, bad enough to drive on. I'd say it's verging on next to impossible to cycle on with 700c/ tubs.
Then, the mother of all rain came down last night, and has probably washed away what's left of any road surface!

The roads are so bad around wexford town that if the gardai see you driving in a straight line they will think that you're drunk:)

Our roads are just not built well enough to withstand weather like that.

Some dreadful craters on Church Road in Rathmines all of a sudden, quite unreal. This freak weather has really done more damage than was thought.

Mmmmm. That post got ye talking.Seems to be a countrywide problem alright. Just wondering, with the Barrow Wheelers 100k on in two weeks, whether the potholes will be repaired by then, or will we spend the time on the bike watchin the road for oncoming disasters.

Local authority resources are very limited at present, and I suspect only major problems will be dealt with in the short term. It's also not the time of year to be doing road repairs of this nature. If they do it, and the icy weather returns, the repair work can end up being undone
