Wisdom teeth removal issues

12 days ago I had all four wisdom teeth removed. I did not have a post-opt appointment. My left side is fine, but my right side is still painful. I long ago ran out of my pain meds and penicillin, and am now taking about 10 ibuprofin a day. I also made a "cleaning" appointment with my dentist for next week to see if there is an infection. When complaining to my mom, she asked me if i was still putting gauze in my mouth so that i could tell if there was still pus or bleeding. I had not been, but decided to start again, so I could see myself. There is a brown pus on one side and a little blood, both from the same side of my mouth, but from different teeth. My questions are: 1. Should I be gurgleing with salt water again as I have stopped? 2. Are there other things I should do prior to my visit that would lessen the pain? 3. Is this an infection or normal? 4. Should I cancel the cleaning appointement with my dentist and instead make an appointment with the oral surgeon who removed the teeth? Any extra feedback is appreciated :)

Ah, OP, getting my wisdom teeth pulled was one of the worst experiences of my life...ugh, I feel your pain!

I had unbelievable pain on one side due to dry sockets, but after 3 days I couldn't take it and went back to the oral surgeon. He put these special medicated gauze packs in, and they helped right away - like within 20 minutes. Maybe that's what the problem is?

Even if it's not dry sockets (which are excruciating), my jaw still didn't feel right for weeks afterwards. My oral surgeon had me rinsing with salt water for weeks, and using a thing that looks like a needle with a plunger to rinse food particles out of the big gaping holes that were left behind (it takes months for the bone to fill in again. I could definitely feel it if I forgot to flush or ate something when I wasn't at home that got stuck back there. In your case it may be that something got stuck in there that caused an infection. Again, maybe you should see your oral surgeon - they can sort out whatever is going on and give you gauze packs or a "flusher" or whatever you need. Good luck...

I would reccommend making an appointment to see the oral surgeon for a check up. Start washing your mouth out with warm salt water again. It is very good for healing. Not sure what else you could do for the pain. I was taking nurofen and solpadine every 6 hours for a little over two weeks after my op. I think it is easy to get an infection after pulling wisdom teeth as bits of food can get stuck down in the holes and it's difficult to clean with brushing.

I had my wisdom teeth out in mid december and they're still healing.

Can I ask a wee question about Wisdom teeth?

How do they know when to start growing, I mean what triggers them, and why is it when you are like 20 years old (well for me anyway). Also how do teeth know to stop growing out of the gum, and not grow and grow until they fall out????

Random, but its been bugging me.
