An iPod Touch is not "locked" to a carrier in the way an iPhone is, so I don't know what you mean by "unlock".

I tried Jailbreak a couple of months ago: you don't go anywhere or pay anyone, you can do it at home. It required you to be on 3.0 firmware at the newest, downgrade if you'd gone to 3.01 or later. It involves patching a copy of the 3.0 firmware using a utility (Redsn0w) and flashing the iPod with it. The instructions were easy to find and follow (see Sticky at the top of this forum).

I found it was more trouble than it was worth, and undid it by reflashing with the latest. I already have full-featured computers to play with, and I'm happy to treat the iPod Touch like an appliance.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Forget about unlocking , that's for iPhones.

When did you purchase your itouch ?

You need to jailbreak , the easiest method is blackra1n , but Your itouch will need to be running the latest firmware 3.1.2 , if so follow this..,

    Go to Blackra1n.com
Select your operating system (Windows or Mac )
    Download to your desktop .
Plug your itouch into your P.C (If iTunes opens , close it)
Double click on the "blackra1n.exe" on your desktop .
    Click "make it rain"
    Follow the instructions
    10 secs later ..your jaibroken.

On your itouch you will see a "blackra1n" App .
    Open it .
Install Cydia or whatever you prefer .

    end .

Hey mixednuts not trying to hijack this thread, but while you are online, have you heard anywhere if there is any prospect of a non tethered jailbreak being released? I'm going for a 32Gb 3Gs and my only concern with jailbreaking is the thought of having the phone rendered useless (until I can get to my laptop) if an app locks the phone up and needs a reboot.

    Victor,
I am afraid it does not look good , unless the Dev team do something.
Geohot has stated on many occasions that he won't ( or can't) make a untethered jb for 3.1.2 http://m.twitter.com/geohot.
He is putting the feelers out to see how much people would pay for a dongle that would re-jb your device , say if you lost power whilst on the road .
It essentially would be a short lead with a small pcb that would mimic what tethering to your pc would do .This is only an idea at the moment in someones head , so bit far away from knowing if a untethered is on the horizon.

    A tethered jb wouldn't stop me getting a 3GS .
You would be surprised how little you power down your device .
If I am installing any apps sure I will be near a P.C ( no probs there)
Only thing is Cydia apps... I would most definitly not do any Cydia installs unless near a p.c , and never whilst on the road .
These must account for more than half of a "required hard reboot" ... You don't wanna have to do that when not near a p. c

    hope that helps.

    M.
