I was wondering if you could help me with this. A friend of mine is a musician who gigs pretty much for a living. He plays both his own material and covers in wedding bands, Saturday night bands etc. I was wondering if he would qualify for the artists exemption?. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Not a definitive answer because I'm not 100% sure of the tax law, however my take on this is that he would not qualify for the artists exemption.

He would be exempt if he got his original music published and people bought his records. As far as I know U2 and the like do pay tax on concerts and paid performances.

With that said the exemption is a joke as Bertie's autobiography was considered eligible so it's clearly open for "abuse", though not necessarily for the likes of your friend.

Thanks , thats what I was thinking. It is ver unfair when as you point out, some of the things which are deemed to have artistic or cultural merit!
