Engine manufacturers

I often read posts in this forum where somebody says that a certain car actually uses a different manufacturer's engine... e.g. the Fiat engine in one of the Suzuki Swift models....

So my question is (I've done a bit of googling to no avail) which car manufacturers use which engines?

I know thats probably a far too general question, if so then can people just post other examples like the Suzuki/Fiat situation I mentioned above.

Please don't turn this into a discussion/debate/argument about which engines are better and why, I would just like to know (purely out of interest) which car manufacturers use which engines in any models you know of! Thanks.

Of the european manufacturers I can only think of Mercedes Benz, BMW and PSA (Peugeot/Citroen) that have never used anyone elses engines ...and even there I'm probably to be proven wrong later in this thread :D

Ford and Peugeot share the same 1.6 hdi unit built under a Ford/PSA (Peugeot Citroen parent company) joint venture.

Opel used an Isuzu built 1.7td unit in the Vectra and Astra in the mid 90s.

Honda also used the Rover L Series Diesel in Civics and Accords in the late 1990's. I doubt any made it to these shores.

The Rover 213 used a Honda engine
The Rover 216/416 (89 to 95) used a Honda SOHC engine, the 95 on ones that were automatic also used the Honda engine.
The Rover 216/416 GTi up to 95 used a Honda DOHC engine, also the cabriolet up to 96 used this. Early 216 Coupe used the 1.6 SOHC engine.
All Rover 600s that were not turbo used either a 1.8, 2.0 or 2.3 Honda engine.
The Rover 800 used a 2.7 Honda V6 before the Rover 2.5KV6 was used.

Diesel Civics and Accords sold on mainland Europe in the 90s used the Rover L series engine.

Not a complete list but not far off I think. As Landyman says the K was used by Caterham. Also Lotus :)

Ford are easy when it comes to diesels, they'll put anything under their bonnet.

The current Ka has a Fiat diesel.
The current Fiesta/Focus/Mondeo use a mix of Ford and PSA engines.
The original Galaxy used the VAG TDi.
The Scorpio used a VM diesel.
The Maverick used a Nissan diesel.

If it wasn't mentioned already Mazda and Ford have shared certain engines in the past if not presently. 1996 Mazda 121 and Ford Fiesta from that year onwards and they were in fact one and the same car for all but badging and certain other miscellaneous differences.

I do know also that its possible to get a Toyota Corolla van (if not car also probably) with a 1.9 litre Peugeot diesel engine...It would be the model from circa 1999 - 2002 direction.
