    hi there :)

I am using a Toshiba Laptop around a year old. The sound was working perfectly until yesterday I logged on and the symbol at the bottom right says "no audio output device is installed".

This is very annoying, I assume it is a problem with the sound card but does anyone know what I have to do??

    Thanks for the help

Have you installed any new software? What operating system are you using?. You could try a system restore.

What does it say in device manager in relation to the sound card?

It has 2 sound things in it under "sound, video and game controllers"

    1) High Definition Audio Device - and it says "this device is working properly"
    2) Realtek High Definition Audio - and it says "this device is working propery"

damn this is annoying..it says they are working properly and yet at the bottom right of the screen where you control the sound there is a red x on it and says "No Audio Output Device Is Installed"

Check your Windows Update history. This used to happen with my Ma's PC a lot. Windows Update would update the sound driver with one that gave no sound. :D Rolling back the driver sorted it out. So take a look at see if there's been an update to the sound driver in the last couple of days.

Each time that I've updated the Realtek drivers, my chosen output was changed to digital, instead of headphones/speakers etc, so I never got any sound until I went into the Realtek HD Audio Manager and changed it back again.

Might be worth checking this as it's a strong possibility. It's also probably the reason for Monkeypant's Ma's problem.:pac:

Must be Control panel - sound. Haven't got any Vista machines kicking around since the God of Windows 7 was released, but here's a link:

Okay, I'll give this a try.

    Open Control Panel.

    controlpanelr.th.jpg

Click on "Hardware and Sound" and then "Sound."

    sounda.th.jpg

Highlight the option that you want to use and then use the "Set Default" button at the bottom to move the little green check.

    Bugger:(

Try reinstalling your sound software/driver program(s).

    What soundcard is it?
