I am considering going to DCU next year and would like to get on-campus accommodation. When is the latest I should be applying?

It doesn't matter in the slightest. I applied the day I got my CAO offer and got a place, but I got chatting to people who applied around Jan/Feb who didn't get it.

As far as I know it's largely based on how close you are from DCU. Example: I live in Dublin, I apply in March. Guy #2 lives in Cork and applies in August. I'm fairly certain they'd give Guy #2 preference. And if they don't they probably should.

So yeah OP, applying early couldn't hurt.

I applied for first year campus accomodation pretty much the day applications opened and got it, so I'd say better to be safe & apply early if you're fairly sure you'll want to live there. It'll be some time in mid-February, the website www.roomsatdcu.com (I think) should say exactly when. I'm from Tipperary but I knew at least 2 people from the south Dublin area & others from fairly close to Dublin who also got it so you wouldn't be ruled out for being from relatively close to DCU.

I think if you get over 500 points in the LC i think you are guaranteed a place on res.

This is NOT true at all, accommodation is allocated on a lottery system. Where you live is of no relevance. Applications are taken from 22nd February 2010 at roomsatdcu.com

Huh. In that case, I refer to my second point. There should be some logic to it.

As far as I know - what was said about the further you live away from DCU the more likely you are to get accomadation is correct.

Best bet is to email the SU as they will give you a quick (correct) reply.

Or maybe someone from SU will reply to you here.

This is an answer from DCU

If you meet the requirements definitely apply for the access scheme. Its like if your below certain income levels you could get free or 50% off on campus accommodation. Which is a huge help as its pretty damn expensive for what you get.

Apply straight away. There's no point in waiting and no penalty for applying early. And it doesn't matter where you live, all applications are treated equally.

Thanks for all the info, I'll get on to the SU about it.

Where would I find out about the Access Scheme?

    Apply now.

Also, first year with more than 500 points, gauranteed a place, and afaik for first year they take distance from dcu into account

Correct on the 500 points thing wrong on the other. They don't take account of distance at all. It's a random selection of all applicants.

They really should take distance into account though..just a bad system tbh!!

The Earlier you apply in first year the more likely you are to get it though and when I rang them back before I started they said they do take distance into account for first years who apply early!!

After first year though its completely random..you could live 5 hours from the college, apply at 9 O'clock the day applications open and still some guy who lives an hour from the college and applies 4 weeks later could get it ahead of you..thing makes no sense....!!
