I'm happy enough with the crappy old 3 for now ;)

Sure they haven't even reached the potential of what they can do with the PS3 yet. That article says maybe 2012. I may start saving, because I would say with that touted specs, it'll be more expensive than the PS3 on first release.

We're only 3 years into a projected 10 year lifespan. Feck off with yer PS4. :D

Really don't get why they'd be looking to the next generation yet anyway. If they just improved the controller I'd be buying more games for it. :P

I just hope the 3d fad is over by then so I'm not expected to get another new tv just to see the game properly. (WHATS WRONG WITH MY TV DEAD RISING, ITS WIDESCREEN. THAT USED TO BE COOL A YEAR AGO. I CANT SEE WHAT I'M SUPPOSED TO DO JUST BECAUSE I HAVE A TV THATS MORE THAN A YEAR OLD????)

I wouldn't read too much into it. I'd say we'll be seeing a new Xbox long before a new PS3. As was said, it's only 3 years into what Sony have repeatedly said is a 10 year life cycle.

10 year life-cycle will have a 3-4 year overlap with the new console I'd imagine, so we're about halfway to the new console.

thats right only 3 into a projected 10. may be some truth in th info but damn its way too early.. 2012 don't think so. 2014 earliest. not forgetting also they stall these things for at least another holiday season to drain every last cent out of the previous iteration.. oh yes they do!

10 year life-cycle doesn't mean 10 years til a new console, just 10 until the current one isn't on sale any more. The PS2 still isn't 10 years old yet, it was only 6-7 years old when the PS3 came out.

good point.. hence the PS2 section still on gaming sites - in fact Gamespy did a feature recently where the PS2 was only recently in Brasil made widely available/affordable! i think that was a bit harsh though

    PS4 will be a casual gamer's console.

Henceforth, the apocalypse will occur in 2012

Doubt we will see a new PS4 anytime soon. I think Sony will use there new motion controller to extend the life span of the PS3.

Why is everyone so obsessed with new COnsoles be they Xbox, PS or Nintendo?

The Current Gen is only now starting to stretch its legs in terms of what they are capable of technically and both Xbox and PS are capable of easy expansion through software updates add ons etc. Considering the outlay both the majoy players made developing them and consumers have made buying them its bout to be YEARS before there is even a genuine hint at an announcement.

Alas I don't think graphically they can go an awful lot further, they just haven't got enough RAM.

Said every generation and there is always a bunch of games which surpass the graphical expectations towards the end of the generation.

The PS4 is OLD news. I wish they would just hurry up and bring out the PS5.

Scratch that, I'm already bored of the idea of 5, when is 6 out?

The Playstation 2 was released when I was in November 2000.

That'd be 10 years this year.

    PS3 retailed in November 2006.

It is possible that they may release a new gen in 2012, going by that figure, but I doubt it.

Yeah, look at 2006 for PS2 games- Shadow of the Colossus was simply beautiful. It's also really apparent as you move through some of the franchises like Burnout from 1-3 and Tiger Woods. I have high hopes for the PS3 towards the end of it's cycle!

A 2012 release isnt massively out of the question tbh, that'll be nearly 6 years after the Jap release of the PS3, sure there was only 4 years between the Xbox and 360, and 5 between the Gamecube and Wii, so whats the big assumption that Sony arent planning the next PS already? a 10 year lifespan is ridiculous for a console at the rate technology moves these days, you can look at some of the launch titles for the PS3 and they've started to date already like Resistance, looked amazing when it was released, now its a bog standard fps thats been massively eclipsed by its own sequel and stuff like Killzone graphically

PS2 is still rolling off the production lines, its had a 10 year life span and its still selling and having games developed for it, If sony were to aim for a 10 year span for the PS3 on the same model we might expect to see a new Home Console from Sony in 2013 with continued support for the PS3, its hardly a ridiculous supposition is it?

As for whether launch games appear dated the same can be said for each and every system, sometimes within months of launch. If that weren't the case it would mean that the games weren't getting any better, and we wouldn't want that would we.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,562 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

once the world in general has got out of the recession, then i'd reckon all of ninty, sony and M$ will be taking steps towards new consoles. that said, i reckon there's more juice to be unleshed in the PS3 than the 360 or wii.

Yeah but how many of those PS2 titles are big titles? they're mostly ports of other games and WWE/football yearly updates, 2005-6 was the PS2's last amazing year, with GOW, DMC3, MGS3, SOTC, RE4 and a bunch of others, its inevitable that most of the graphically best games will come out towards the end of a consoles life once the developers know how to squeeze everything out of the systems performance

Way to miss my point completely about the launch titles btw, kudos

I must have missed your point too then.

Anyway the PS2, is currently on its 9th year to be fair. A ten year cycle is not ridiculous at all.

If and when we do see a PS4 it better be backward compatible with every previous playstation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,366 ✭✭✭Star Bingo

still entertaining this? when PS4 comes out i'll probs be closer to 4-ty

If and when we do see a PS4 it better be backward compatible with every previous playstation.

Not going to happen. It's always this contentious issue at the start of a new cycle but ultimately dies off after a while. No one really gives a crap about the ps3 being backwards compatible. No ones buying it to play PS2 games when they (for the most part) already own a PS2.

As difficult and expensive as it was to do PS2 backwards compatibility on the PS3, it'll be next to impossible on the PS4 if they go down the route with the chip that they appear to be. Whole different architecture means there's too much work involved to replicate cell on a new system, and the pay off is next to none. Why bother?

Thats the way it seems to be too, in my head anyway. However if the PS4's introduction took alot longer to materialise than the intro of the PS3, then could the cost of putting PS3 tech in the console be conceiveable?

I mean latest rumour says they are going to continue with the cell, so if the PS4 didn't materialise for 5 years would the cost of PS3 tech not be significantly down by now?

Probably not after all that, I guess the leap in cost between PS2 and PS3 was just that much proportionally larger than the jump between PS1 and PS2.

Exactly, plus PS2s are cheap enough new and second hand that a standalone unit is fine if you want to play crappy ps2 games. Will be the same with PS3

Crappy PS2 games? Some of the most innovative and greatest games were released on that platform.

I'd put good money on you being wrong. Sony will put a lot of effort into backwards compatibility. PS3 BC maybe be tough unless the PS3 chipset is included but I'd say it will be on there as well.

However I'd say you won't be able to play the games from a disc and they will be made available from PSN.

Whoever is looking forward to a PS4 soon can go **** themselves. I paid 500 dollars for mine 18 months ago and it's only getting a decent workout recently.

Yes, but that's the same theory as the PS2 and the PS3... they could put PS2 chips into PS3 Slim models but that pushes costs up a little more in a time when a 360 off the shelf costs €50 cheaper anyway (yes without bluray, wifi, play&charge, etc.) and that's all people look at!

Disagree. They tried that with the emotion engine stuck onto the PS3 launch models and it didn't work. Costs were kept artificially high (it costs as much to make legacy hardware as it does new hardware) and ultimately not enough people cared. It was a nice bullet point against the 360, sure, but not enough to out-sell the 360 initially.

As for PSN releases. I can see that happening, but in the same way it's happening now. God of War type boxsets for PS3. Basically ports that people are willing to pay for. I can see an Uncharted boxset for the PS4, for example... but you're paying for the effort of porting the game over!

    +1
Paid €600 for my 60GB at launch. It's served me well but I don't want to go through this cycle of expense again anytime soon!

In fairness on that regard you're talking about much, much simpler technology. Very few overheads and the costs are low anyway. PS4 is a whole different ballgame. This is developing a whole new architecture and system suite. It's the same as migrating from one server to another type of server. Difficult and costly...
