Hurling Helmets

I am going to buy a new helmet and have decided on a micro extra lite as I find them very comfortable and conform to IS 355. The one problem I have is with the face guard which seriously impairs vision due to the amount of bars. I want to remove the micro guard and replace it with my kilkenny guard. Are the micro guards easy to remove, and will the kilkenny guard fit properly? any helpful comments would be appreciated greatly.

The guard should fit. But if you alter the helmet (change the guard) it will no longer be to IS 355 standard.

Thanks for that, just worrying a bit about the clips which hold the mycro guard on, seem tricky to remove, not like the old guards which just had a couple of normal bolts to loosen. If I do change the guard the helmet will still be safer than the old gola one Ive been using for years!

It prob will be safer alrite but it wont be to IS 355 and therfore any insurance cover will be void.

I no it has been discussed at length already, but the enforcement of this is going to be very interesting. I just cant see a similar soccer type pre match analysis of helmets. I feel that as long as you are wearing a helmet then it is going to be enough. Most injury claims from hurling come from fellas not wearing any type of helmet, resulting in tooth loss, broken nose, gashes to head etc.

It will be even more interesting to see if the insurance company is going to ask for helmets for analysis if an injury is sustained while playing.

While investigating the differnt brands on the market. I found the Marc and azzurai (who also have IS 355) as been extremely uncomfortable to wear. I just cant see any hurler who already has a comfortable SK100 with kilkenny guard rushing to shops to buy new helmets.

The cost is another thing. With the amount of people unemployed I think that fellas are not going to fork out €75 for new headgear.

While on the topic is there anything against wearing an ice-hockey helmet in hurling? Does anyone have the regulations regarding what is/isn't allowed to hand?

Im afraid its not in great condition, there are a good few cracks. I wouldnt be buying a new one if it was in ok knick. Has taken alot of abuse over the years so I think its time to retire it!!

    How're ya lads?

I'm looking for a new helmet for this season before it gets in full flow, and I'm struggling to find a helmet that fits comfortably... I have an old school helmet Scanda... I know I know, really old school, but I have had not problem with it in my years of hurling...

I'm having trouble with the new helmets, I have tried the mycro helmets, and it's just not sitting right either the faceguard is too small, or the helmet is leaving the back of my head totally exposed...

So to cut to the chase...

What helmet between the approved three is the biggest?
(Long Shot here, but) are the helmets adjustable like the coopers and scandas, where you can make them slightly bigger within it's constraints?

Is there anyone else finding it hard to find a helmet that fits nicely?
Or better yet has anyone had this problem and found a solution.

Well I have seen all three of the new helmets up close lately. I have bought a Micro extra lite, its very comfortable with the softer inside padding. Its only a small size, but fits me well. I have seen other lads with them in a large who have pretty big heads and fits them well.

The azzurai large helmets are quite big fitting as well, but have the harder inside foam making them a little bit uncomfortable.

My brother has recently bought a marc, a good looking helmet, but thats it. He bought a medium, and it doesnt fit my head, with that hard inside foam making it uncomfortable.

None of the helmets from what I see can be adjustable.

If you are looking for a helmet that isnt going to cut the inside of your head, I would look for a micro extra lite. Im sure the large would fit you, but if your head is really on the big size, then I am sure they make an extra large.

    Hope this helps.

cheers that does give some help.

I contacted Marc and Azzurri directly; Marc didn't really help at all when i tried finding out the sizes in comparisons; and Azzurri, extra large helmet hasn't reached the safety standards yet...

Mycro do make an extra large, but it's not particularly comfortable... i think i might just have to make some adjustments and hope it's not picked up!!!

A few lads on our team had the same problem, with the helmet fitting nicely but the face guard just not fitting right... so each of the lads (myself included); got the "kilkenny face guards" from our old helmets (think the lad from Ballycallan is selling them) - and attached them to the Myrco helmet... tis a nice fit

I know this isn't "insurable", however our manager told us to make sure we've a helmet that fits us comfortably and is one of the recommended ones...

on the first few glances you wouldn't notice the modification; and it's a common enough trend among plenty of players- like tommy walsh; larkin and loads others...
