Communes and Communities - Request

After a year of self analysis, I quit my job to try and contribute to something, find a purpose and pursue my gifts and talents.

Does anyone know of any communes or communities in Ireland, preferably ones without specific religious ties, where a guy can drift in, play some guitar, do a bit of healing, maybe offer some arts workshops and generally get involved - and most importantly, learn something?

I am prepared to travel anywhere on this island and I have my own tent :)

    I hope someone can help.

    Thank you.

    Heya
kinda not linked to this specific thread, but..... with all the left-wing or hippy types in ireland (especially amongst students), is there no "alternative" threads on boards? I mean then there would have been a suitable place to put this thread, where people who might actually be able to help this chap out might see it?

    Its just a thought/suggestion :pac:

Does anyone know of arts festivals other than Galway and Kilkenny that will allow a busker to roam in unannounced? I'm thinking lots of towns and villages all over the country will be having festivals throughout the summer. Any ideas? Perhaps you're involved in organising one??

I think theres a few artisitc communes down around Ballydehob and West Cork?
Also The Rossport Solidarity camp up in Mayo would have a similar vibe to what your after but Im not sure its still going.

Ara sure just show up at any of them! Fleadh ceoils and trad fests are always a great laugh, there's hundreds of festivals on every year just google it and you'll find sites with lists of all the Irish festivals going on. My mates have been holdin a juggling fest in clonakilty west cork every summer for the last few years and it's brilliant fun. They're always looking for volunteers to hel out setting it up and you get a pass for all the workshops and shows for helping. Cork has a huge jazz festival and the midsummer fest here is very arty.
Commune wise can't think of much now, there used to be a rainbow gathering settlement in cahirciveen in kerry way back when I was a kid but don't think theres much of a seen for it these days.
The whole tara and rossort thing'd be a bit political for my likes, don't think there's the best crowd as those particular spots these days.
Why not look up workaway.com and check out the Irish options, great stuff to get involved with there. Also look into woofing, lots of cool people doing the self sufficiency and small holding thing if yer able for a bit of manual labour!

That's brilliant, Khrys, I'll definitely follow up on your suggestions. Meanwhile, i have a friend who has a friend who I hope to be able to tag a long with as well.

Sorry getting back to this so late (couldn't log in for ages then found out my new keyboard didn't have a number pad and the Num Lock was off ), but thank you all for your suggestions.

    Hi,

I know you were looking for this last year, but did you by any chance find any? I'm looking for one myself, and I'll go anywhere in Ireland for it. I came across one over the internet called Burdautien, but I cant seem to find anymore info on it. I seem to be looking for the same kind of thing as you, no specific religious ties. It would be fantastic if you could get back to me with anything you might have found out! :)

    Thanks! :D

well i saw this request and how it is in life you see hints when you are in the same place.
I am in kerry and there is one in Dingle, Camphill but that seems to be a special needs place.
Well I read it with great interest and I am on the same quest, looking for a commune to live together and NON POLITICAL or specially RELIGIOUS and just share the company and assist and help out each other....

    where are all these people?
    Did you find something out?
    Let me know!

It's been a year and I've still come up with nothing, though there's one in Wales (Coed Hills) which is an exact match for what I was thinking about.

I don't want to leave here that much, though.

Has anyone else got an update??

Found this thread while searching for a similar thing myself. Almost a year later - still no sign of any real communes in Ireland. Perhaps the only answer is to start one ourselves..

Inter, in Britain there is lots of projects; eg Lammas http://lammas.org.uk/ Land Matters http://www.landmatters.org.uk/ Findhorn http://www.findhorn.org etc etc etc

In ireland there is a few too though
Like Cloughjordan http://thevillage.ie/ Carraig Dulra http://www.dulra.org/ and various others eg http://permaculture.ie/projects
Significantly, we have a much longer established and larger scale project than elsewhere in Kinsale http://www.transitiontownkinsale.org/ , the first of its kind in the world. Totnes, Devon, has now also adopted this policy, but Ireland was a world first/leader in the area.

The vast majority of international communities never get off the ground. This has generally been estimated at around 90% failure rate in the permaculture texts that i have read. However, if you want to get a glimpse at preparation and building stages of one of the most famous success stories in the UK (Lammas), and all the hard work required to get to get it up and running (eg planning permission- something that is less of an issue in this country) then there is 30-odd episodes uploaded on http://www.livinginthefuture.org/ . Its a positively inspiring series for anyone interested in intentional communities.

The Hollies is not a community though.

I would love to know more about finding a commune in Ireland. I am really interested in the idea of living in a community of like minded people.
