Haiti (Donate By Text?)

Is it possible to donate by text? I saw a few American charities have a service where you can text 'HAITI' to 50101, etc. and it will charge $5/$10 to your phone bill or take it from your credit. Is there any Irish charity that is doing this?

I looked at Concern and Red Cross but they only take credit cards and I don't have one.

If you give €10 how much of that will actually go towards people who need it?
Not trying to start an argument with anyone but if I donate money to a cause then I want ALL of it to go to the people that need it, I don't want them to get a percentage of it because of 'administration' costs.

And you might be as well off to keep the money in your pocket for the moment. A lot of countries are sending money & resources to Haithi at the moment so it's in a months time that they will probably really need your support.

I would suspect a percentage of these premium numbers goes to the service providers. If I didn't have a credit card I would go to the post office and purchase a postal order and send it to the Red Cross or Concern.

Medecins sans frontieres (msf.ie) accept laser cards to donate.

    Thanks guys.
Organise a cake sale instead for the earthquake... you can call it a "Shake and bake".
    Idiot.

If you donate over €250 and are a PAYE tax payer they can get the tax you paid earning that money too.

    For example

    https://www.concern.net/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=42

Good call, if you are a PAYE worker, the charity can claim the tax back and use it and it'll be a sizable cut

I don't know about donating by mobile credit OP. For sure the premium rate service providers are taking their cut.
Medecins sans frontieres or the Red Cross do fantastic work

When the South East Asia Tsumani hit in 2004, I seem to remember the Irish were one of the highest donaters per head of population. I've no doubt this statistic will repeat itself now

Is that a bit harsh on Pretty Boy?

He obviously feels strongly enough about what has happened to look for a way to donate money & he probably lost his cool after reading the reply Creeping Death made.

    Another chance?

Go on, it's nearly Christmas again!

Would feel similarily anout it tbh. If i thought my €5 or €20 or €100 etc would go directly to the people in need i'd contribute. Saying that, there are bound to be costs involved, not sure if these are being kept to the minimum though.

I think no matter what you do, short of flying over and handing someone on the street money, part of your donation will go to admin costs. Just pick someone like the red cross who were fast to respond and are doing everything they can and donate to them.
